WayForward announces Shantae Advance
Shimmy shimmy shimmy, shake shake shake.
None of us here can belly dance; despite numerous intoxicated attempts to hone the art, the skill continues to evade us. Having said that, we're willing to bet Tom can do an amazing impression of the wobble thing Chunk does in The Goonies. We'll tell you someone who can belly dance though, and that's Shantae.

Another Namco name on the list.
Finally, someone's answered the question we were mulling over rather worriedly when R: Racing Evolution went gold a few weeks ago - who is going to publish it in the UK and when? That somebody is, of course, the mighty Electronic Arts, who once again look set to reap the benefits of a lucrative deal with Namco which has already given them a massive No.1 in the shape of Soul Calibur II.

Treason!
Vivendi-Universal Games has sent out a short release confirming that PS2 and Xbox title The Lord of the Rings: The Treason of Isengard has been canned. Originally due out in Q4 2003, Isengard was dumped from release schedules earlier this year - apparently because "it was determined that the game was not shaping up as strongly as anticipated and would likely not satisfy the expectations of Tolkien fans". Which is fair enough until you consider that VU Games happily published The Fellowship of the Ring...

Say 'Halo' to the Peugeot Hoggar
It won't flinch.
It may not have a rear-mounted machine gun or rocket launcher, but as those eagle-eyed folks at GameSpot rightly point out, the new Peugeot Hoggar concept car still has a lot in common with Bungie's all-terrain Warthog buggy from Halo. In fact, when Microsoft gets round to suing them, we're hoping they'll seize and decorate a load of them so we can race around shooting people at X04. (Note: actual lawsuit may vary.)

Review | Need For Speed Underground
Kristan feels the need.
Guys, I think it's time for a new subtitle. When you've got two games in the top five that use Underground like some kind of we're-so-down-with-the-kids term then you know the games industry is drifting inexorably into the realms of self-parody. Even Eurogamer's handy random game subtitle generator could have come up with a better one... Whirr click. Here's one - Revolutions! Shit. Whirr click. Xtreme! Damn. Whirr click. 2004. Grrr! (At least it's honest.)

Who won our TrackMania/Scalextric competition?
Find out if it was you! (It wasn't. Mostly.)
Expensive Scalextric sets are a lot like high class whores - you can't afford them, you shouldn't really spend money on them, but if you do take the plunge so to speak [eurgh -Ed] then you'll have hours of fun sliding metal toys through grooves and [that's quite enough of that one -Ed].

Review | Broken Sword: The Sleeping Dragon
Can Revolution revive the sleeping genre?
The adventure game genre must be a tough one to sell to risk averse publishers these days. Here's roughly how a fictitious developer-publisher meeting might play out.

Feature | Dude, Where's My Content?
Tom worries about premium content.
This week, Microsoft became one of the first companies to distribute premium content over Xbox Live. As of today, folks all over the globe can pay the equivalent of $4.99/£3.63 for two new game types and three new maps. Good, you might be thinking, now we get proper downloadable content instead of just stuff they found down the back of the sofa.

Vanilla Cube deal gets Zelda backing
Collector's Edition disc slipped into every box from December 1st.
Nintendo's Zelda Collector's Edition disc for GameCube has become a highly desirable commodity - it no doubt helped boost sales of the GameCube/Mario Kart bundle, it's got Nintendo.co.uk readers scrambling to cobble together the 4,500 star points required to 'purchase' it when it joins the Star Catalogue on December 1st, and now the platform holder is using it as the basis for another sales incentive - the vanilla GameCube bundle.

Plus: Warren Spector speaks out - 'Give us a chance will you?!'
The PC version of Deus Ex: Invisible War has now gone gold, meaning the game will make its previously announced US shelf date of December 3rd - we presume it's still on track for February over here (we can almost hear the torrent sites creaking under the strain).

Microsoft launches PremiumAssault
MechAssault content that costs.
The best things in life may be free, but I feel sure they wouldn't be if the proprietors had Microsoft's smooth transaction management system for premium content. Those of you firing up MechAssault this morning to engage a few poor souls over your corn flakes may have spotted a rather spangly, 3598-block addition to the Downloadable Content menu in the shape of a new "Objective Package". It's a hefty chunk of new content - two new multiplayer game types and three new maps - but the most striking thing about it is the cost!

Get excited and then buy it.
The original Dungeon Siege received a somewhat lacklustre reception on this site many moons ago, somewhat going against popular opinion of Gas Powered Games' action RPG. Still, with the forthcoming Legends of Aranna standalone expansion pack and Dungeon Siege II on the way next year, our faith could yet be restored.

Review | Amped 2
It's nothing like SSX and proud of it.
SSX 3 is undeniably one of the best games of the year. It pushes almost every button convincingly - it has speed, it has a deceptively simple trick system which yields some truly exhausting displays of acrobatic artistry, it has intricately designed, beautiful and occasionally exotic tracks, it has EA's trademark presentation values and it has a vast number of things to do with a snowboard. But what it doesn't do is accurately portray the mother of extreme sports, give any sort of inkling as to how professional snowboarders come to exist, or demand anything more than a crude level of precision. In short, it's effortlessly stylish.

Review | Manhunt
Disgusted of NW2 speaks.
It would be so easy to write up a Manhunt review from the viewpoint of Disgusted of NW2, churning out hundreds of bile-fuelled reactionary statements about the decline in the moral fibre of humankind and the dangers of videogaming on the impressionable minds of the youth of today, but we'll leave that to The Daily Mail to mull over, thanks.

Review | Counter-Strike
Kristan is struck dumb.
Happy accident or stroke of genius, no one should begrudge the monolithic success of Counter-Strike. Any game that sucks the hours away so relentlessly for so many years deserves our undying gratitude. If it wasn't for the cheating mofos and the spluttering Steam system that has conspired to make it a tiresomely unreliable experience we'd probably spend even more addled hours honing our online skills. The fact that it's merely a free add on for Half-Life truly boggles the mind, and as a package it's probably done more to drive online gaming than any other.

FIFA, Need For Speed and Return Of The King clean up as Manhunt, Ratchet 2 and Prince Of Persia disappoint...
EA once again utterly trounced the opposition this week, with FIFA 2004 holding firm at the top slot (compared with Pro Evo 3 which slides to No.13), supported by Need For Speed: Underground making a surprisingly high debut at No.2, and The Return Of The King moving up one place to No.3.

Ghoulies no show shock as Rare's latest stiffs.
Microsoft suffered embarrassment this morning as Rare's first Xbox title Grabbed By The Ghoulies failed to dent even the Xbox Top 20 on its long-anticipated debut. The title was heavily promoted upon the run up to its release, and secured prime position in key retailers, including Game which racked it at No.1 in its in-store Xbox chart, rather amusingly.

Vernon Kay to host Sexiest Gamer final
Is that some paint drying over there? Quick!
A while ago you were asked: Are you the UK's sexiest gamer? Because if you were, and submitted your details to Sexiest Gamer, you were in with a chance of winning a trip for two to Hollywood. Well, we were obviously thrilled to hear yesterday then that the website has now whittled a total of 1,000 contestants down to a top 10 for the UK, and that TV's Vernon Kay ("the fresh-faced presenter of Channel 4's T4") will host the UK final on Thursday December 11th at The Institute for Contemporary Arts in London. Wow, that place really has gone to the dogs!
