  13. Gotham Knights PC: can its severe problems explain poor console performance?

Digital Foundry | Gotham Knights PC: can its severe problems explain poor console performance?

Even a Core i9/RTX 4090 rig can drop beneath 60fps.

Gotham Knight's performance woes on consoles continue to cause controversy, with many worried that it's the first title to signal a resurgence in 30fps gaming for the latest console hardware. The PC version - with its adjustable settings, hardware monitoring and the ability to switch out hardware - allows us to pick apart the issues, separate them, and get a better idea of what what makes this game tick. In doing so, we should be able to answer why frame-rates are capped at 30fps on consoles. The bottom line is that this game has severe CPU utilisation problems that almost certainly affect the PS5 and Xbox Series builds too, while the PC version has additional issues exclusive to that platform.

  20. Saturnalia review - a man flees from the darkness down a pink and peach alleyway

The village of Gravoi, somewhere on the island of Sardinia, is a cluttering of cobbled alleyways, concentric stairways, and shaded nooks where a wheezing tourist might take refuge from the heat. In the boiling sun, overlooking the tinselled Mediterranean Sea, it's the ideal backdrop for an Instagram shoot: billowing dresses, floppy straw hats, leggy prawns splayed across a white porcelain plate. At night, however, Gravoi provides the blueprint and backdrop for a nightmare. Its architectural swirl of dead ends, religious shrines, and silhouetted iron gratings describe a hellish, claustrophobic warren. It's this latter reality in which Saturnalia, a survival horror game set in a shifting village, is principally set. Described by its makers as a "procedural death labyrinth", it is a place of horrors both physical and psychological into which the game's four protagonists are inexorably drawn.

  26. This could be a scene from a Japanese horror film, except it looks like a scene from an old adventure game. It's painted in two colours, one a kind of brown for the environment, and one in purple showing a hunched over girl holding the end of a bed, hair obscuring her face. She is out to get you.

It doesn't seem like Faith: The Unholy Trinity should be able to do this, to scare us, because it looks like something I played decades ago on a BBC Micro. It's got squiggly MS Paint lines for graphics, there are maybe two frames of animation, the sound garbles anything it plays, and you can even hear system beeps. And yet, somehow, Faith manages it - manages to be unsettling, manages to make me jump, manages to scare me. Had I played this as a kid, I would never have slept again.
