Feature | Modern Warfare 2's campaign is big, bold and kind of boring
Solid copy.
In something of an inspired move, this year's Call of Duty is enjoying a staggered release, with the campaign being made available to all those who've pre-ordered Modern Warfare 2 a week ahead of the full release on 28th October. And as campaigns go it's possibly as big and bold as Call of Duty - a series that's not exactly renowned for being reserved - gets. Is it any good, though? We've played through it all and here are our thoughts...

Digital Foundry | Why the return of 30fps console games is inevitable
More ambitious games push hardware further - and something has to give.
Last week saw the release of two new games that do not support 60 frames per second gaming on PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series consoles, Gotham Knights and A Plague Tale: Requiem. Many would argue that one of the greatest wins from the new wave of consoles has been that the majority of titles support 60fps - or even 120fps - representing a game-changing improvement over the last-gen standard 30fps. The question is why this brace of titles do not support this option and whether it signifies the beginning of the end of 60fps as a standard for console gaming.

Recommended | The Case of the Golden Idol review - model murder mystery mayhem
We didn't start the satire.
As a lifelong lover of period dramas and detective games, I was delighted to start up The Case of the Golden Idol and find myself in media res, watching a murder unfold on-screen. There are no explanations, no friendly tutorial pop-ups, and no hand-holding - my favorite (and arguably the best) way to start a mystery. The game's chapters are made up of brilliant tableaus that tell the tale of the Cloudsley dynasty - one of whom is in the first opening scenario - and how they leave their mark upon a fictional version of 18th-century England. The aesthetic is pixel-perfect nostalgic - a lively hand-illustrated style that invokes the caricature-like angles of Maniac Mansion and Day of the Tentacle, and the satirical prints of editorial cartoonists like William Hogarth, who chronicled London's current events in the 1700s.

Essential | Signalis review - a sumptuously atmospheric survival horror
Dear Elster.
I can't tell you what events literally happen in Signalis, the debut game for studio Rose Engine, or in what order they occur. The entire game is an intentionally hazy nightmare. But how it made me feel is clear as day, because it is a profoundly affecting experience, both in the unnerving dread of its moment to moment exploration and fighting and also in the larger arc of its story: a rumination on identity and memory that haunts me. I've thought of little else since I finished it. Now, as if struck by a cosmic curse, I intend to bring anyone who will listen into the fold of this masterful survival horror.
