Review | The Quarry review - sumptuous slasher horror digs its own grave
Undermined.

Recommended | Card Shark review - scoundrels and intrigue, delivered with a flourish
Aces!
Listen. There's a card trick you like. You look it up in a book, make sense of the weird diagrams, and get it all semi-straight in your head. You find a pack of cards, get them comfortable in your hand, make sense of the weird diagrams again - they seem to have changed now you have actual cards to hold - and then? Then you practice. Alone, on the sofa, by a window, perched in front of a mirror like you're supposed to do it, you practice and practice. Finally you have the trick down. Everything's so elegant. The joins are invisible. The flex and flow of the cards is deeply pleasing to your soul. Even the patter is coming along. It all works beautifully.

New report says Fallout 76 development blighted by poor management and mandatory crunch
Leading to "exodus" of senior employees.
A new report into the development of Bethesda's widely derided Fallout 76 has painted a picture of a studio in disarray, as poor management, a lack of design direction, and engine challenges created an environment of apathy, confusion, crunch, and burnout, and a game that ultimately failed to resonate with players.

I like the look of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2's fancy new water tech
Server side waves.
Last night I was shown a pre-recorded presentation in which various developers at Infinity Ward spoke enthusiastically about this year's upcoming shooter Modern Warfare 2 and the various changes it makes to 2019's largely successful Modern Warfare soft reboot. I can't bring you hands-on impressions of the multiplayer, unfortunately (with the lifting of this evening's embargo there will be plenty of videos featuring multiplayer impressions for you to check out), but I can write about something Infinity Ward repeatedly discussed during its presentation: its fancy new water tech.

Digital Foundry | Mario Strikers: Battle League - a technically impressive 1080p60 experience
The Digital Foundry tech review.
There's something to be said for those reliable developers that maybe aren't producing the biggest AAA bangers but consistently produce solid, technically impressive games. Such is the case with Next Level Games and its latest release on Switch - Mario Strikers: Battle League. It's a return to the series that helped forge the studio's relationship with Nintendo but also a fantastic and fun football game that caters more to fans of NBA Jam rather than FIFA Soccer. It's arcade style action that crucially aims for smooth performance and sharp image quality at a time when fewer Switch games manage can deliver this. Looking at the studio's history though, it's perhaps no surprise that Battle League excels.

I can't deny that Fire Emblem: Three Houses is one of my favourite games this generation. From defying the church to restoring a kingdom, I saw everything each route could offer, yet Three Hopes' announcement still left me cautious. Following the success of Hyrule Warriors and, of course, Fire Emblem Warriors, Nintendo has once again teamed up with Koei Tecmo for a musou spin-off, swapping Fire Emblem's tactical RPG gameplay for hack-and-slash combat. I had my doubts at first, but after several chapters those fears are being put to rest.

Review | Mario Strikers: Battle League Football review - slick but slim fun
Tough pitch.
I'd been looking forward to Mario Strikers: Battle League Football because of the chaotic fun I remember having with Mario Strikers Charged, the incarnation of Mario's souped-up sort-of footy series which launched on Wii an astonishing 15 years ago. Battle League (without the Football outside Europe), which arrives this week for Switch, is the first new version of Strikers since then. But the more I played, the less I found of what I used to enjoy.

Feature | Diablo Immortal is the best and the worst of the series all in one
Mixed feelings.
I get huge mixed feelings while playing Diablo Immortal. On the one hand, the core of the game is really good - I'd even go as far as to say it's borderline great. All the stuff I love about Diablo is here: the fountains of loot, the showpiece bosses, the waves of enemies designed to make you feel powerful as you rip them apart. And it's not stingy with this stuff either. Diablo 3 was turgid at the beginning but Immortal throws everything at you from the moment you begin - boss encounters, set pieces, big stuff. And it all makes for a hell of an introduction. It genuinely feels like Diablo at its best.
