Digital Foundry | DDR5 vs DDR4: Which RAM is best for gaming and content creation?
Testing and overclocking XPG DDR5-6000 on Z690.
One of the most interesting things about the debut of Intel's 12th-gen processor platform is that it offers people a meaningful choice in motherboards - not only high-end 'Z' series boards versus cheaper and less feature-rich 'H' and 'B' boards, but also versions equipped with both traditional DDR4 and next-gen DDR5 memory. Most initial review coverage of 12th-gen processors tested primarily on DDR5 boards, including our own, as this offers the best potential for interesting differences between generations, but it leaves open the question of which RAM type is actually the better buy for consumers - both in the short term and the long term.

Feature | Songs of Conquest might be better than Heroes of Might and Magic
Chord blimey.
Songs of Conquest is great. Sometimes you know the moment you play something that it's a belter. You can feel that sense of quality oozing through as soon as you load it up. It's in the music, the look, the feel - I love a game that plays with real zip and this does. I smile returning to it. I want to tell people about it. Songs of Conquest has me.

Opinion | The new PlayStation Plus still feels like a missed opportunity
You're Spartacus?
Following months of speculation and with just a week to go until the service rolls out in Japan I'd love to be able to say we finally know exactly what the new PlayStation Plus is all about. After a partial reveal of what's coming to the revamped service we're a step closer to finding out, yet looking at the list of games available across the three tiers the precise shape isn't any clearer. It's another mumble of an announcement, in keeping with the air of slight incoherence that's surrounded the project since we first heard murmurs of what was once known as Spartacus.

Digital Foundry | DF Direct Weekly talks Nintendo's next-gen challenges and the big Xbox gaming outage
Plus: Gotham Knights gameplay reaction and last-gen console cancellation.
We've been talking/warning about it for a long time - usually in the context of game preservation - but the recent Xbox game outage has certainly justified our concerns. Online DRM, the need to have an active internet connection to verify that you're permitted to play the games you own, has been a hot topic for some time now. There'll come a point in the (hopefully) far-flung future that authentication servers won't be available, making today's games unplayable. What we didn't quite expect was a gaming black-out in the here and now.
