Podcast | Talking accessibility with Vivek Gohil

Episode 4 of One-to-one now available to all.

The tide of accessibility in games is turning. Ground-breaking releases like The Last of Us Part 2, Spider-Man: Miles Morales, and Forza Horizon 5 have shown what can be accomplished when you think about accessibility properly - when you bring the right people on board at the beginning of development and make accessibility a priority from the off. By doing so, you open the doors for more people to enjoy your games than ever before.

Digital Foundry | DF Direct Weekly takes on Cerny's new PS5 video and the terrific Xbox Museum

Plus: is it really the end for FPS Boost?

Welcome to the 39th edition of Digital Foundry Direct Weekly - the regular show where the team downs tools for a couple of hours to discuss the latest gaming and technology news, share details on their projects and field questions from backers of the Digital Foundry Supporter Program. This week's offering kicks off with reaction to a new video from Wired with Mark Cerny discussing how the PlayStation 5 was built. It's an interesting talk, albeit one that's very similar indeed to the now iconic Road to PlayStation 5 albeit with the benefit of a year's worth of game titles that better demonstrate and emphasise the PS5's features. It's also a timely reminder of how Sony turned things around after the complications of PlayStation 3 - to double-down on communicating with developers and giving easier access to the hardware's potential.

  10. The Eurogamer Podcast: Warm drinks with Coffee Talk creator Fahmi

The story goes that Fahmi was drinking a warm green tea latte one cold, rainy night, and looking out of his window, when an idea hit him. He felt serenely calm and warm and wondered, 'Why isn't there a game that makes me feel like this?' So an idea began to, ahem, percolate in his mind. An idea about a game in which you served warm drinks in a cafe late at night, listening to people's lives and problems. And sure, these people happen to literally be succubi and orcs and werewolves and vampires, but they look like us and their problems are very like ours. And lo, Coffee Talk was born.

  16. Deltarune is a game about playing, and it's bloody brilliant

BASICALLY, Deltarune goes like this. You are a lonely kid in a small town. Your name is Kris. You have a sweet but slightly overbearing mother, a high-achieving older brother away at college, and a dad who no longer sleeps in your house. You turn up late to school one morning and find that everybody else is already partnered up for the big project. One by one you go around the room trying to persuade your fellow students to take you on. Then... Suzie kicks down the door.

  17. Sword and Fairy 7 is the cutting-edge PC exclusive nobody's talking about

Digital Foundry | Sword and Fairy 7 is the cutting-edge PC exclusive nobody's talking about

A deep story, high-end visuals, ray tracing - this is an impressive game.

The era of the high-end PC exclusive may well be a thing of the past, but every once in a while a game comes along that is rather special, that can't be played anywhere else and in the case of Sword and Fairy 7, by Softstar Technology in Beijing, we have an excellent role-playing game that piles on the high-end visual features, including ray tracing support - all courtesy of Unreal Engine 4. It's a quality game and looking into it, I've unwittingly stumbled upon a sleeping giant of a games franchise. Sword and Fairy has spawned many games and live action adaptations, and this latest series entry is a high quality production that, curiously, has received very little editorial coverage. That changes today!

Nobody else is doing quite what Rob Dwiar is doing. Dwiar, who works at GamesRadar as a commissioning editor, has spent much of his life as a games writer thinking about gardens. Or maybe he's spent much of his life as a gardening writer thinking about games. Eurogamer readers might be familiar with his work from his lovely articles for Eurogamer. But that's only a part of it. Now, Dwiar has written a book about the intersection of games and landscape. It's called Genius Loci, and it's currently running a campaign on Unbound.

  23. Xbox 360 games and FPS Boost are a match made in heaven

Digital Foundry | Xbox 360 games and FPS Boost are a match made in heaven

Sonic, Fallout, Gears 3, Mirror's Edge and Assassin's Creed tested.

As part of its 20th anniversary celebrations, Microsoft didn't just add to its backwards compatibility library, it also added FPS Boost to Xbox 360 games for the first time. Not only that, it also doubled the frame-rate on select Xbox 360 titles that had already received enhanced 4K support for Xbox One X. Spurred on by the addition of FPS Boost to one of my favourite Sonic games, I decided to take a look at some of these improved experiences, gaining further appreciation for some classic titles.

  25. Battlefield 2042 is coming together - but it still needs work

Digital Foundry | Battlefield 2042 is coming together - but it still needs work

The latest builds tested on PS5 and Xbox Series consoles.

After a pair of entries that saw the Battlefield series revisit World Wars past, Battlefield 2042 is a trip back to the future for EA's premier first-person shooter franchise. Low-tech battles in European locales are out, replaced with massive, highly vertical conflicts in the megacities of the near future. With huge maps, a completely overhauled class system and an intriguing new 'portal' mode, Battlefield 2042 is an undeniably ambitious entry. Is this the next generation in Battlefield action? Perhaps not - it's a cross-gen game at its heart but the scale of combat expands with the move to the new consoles with a doubling of player count - 128 combatants vs last-gen's 64, resulting in absolute mayhem in some scenarios - but can PS5, Series S and Series X handle it? The results are much improved over beta and early access code, but there's still work to do.
