Review | Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl review - gen four remade, in the wrong places
Bigoof.
Let's talk about the Experience Share. The Experience Share (Exp. Share for short) is a simple tool, present in every main series Pokémon game since 1999's Pokémon Gold and Silver, that shares the experience one Pokémon gains from defeating others in battle with the others in your party. It's useful for a few things, but the big one is your experience of the game itself: the Exp. Share is the single most influential tool you have for manipulating the difficulty of the game, helping your whole team level up faster with it on, or slower with it off.

Digital Foundry | Halo Infinite tech preview: a promising campaign with tech issues to address
Does Halo work in an open world? We finally have answers.
Halo Infinite's impressive multiplayer component is now available and based on what we've played in prior test flights, it's highly impressive. However, it's the campaigns that we really love to play and in the wake of last year's controversial gameplay trailer, 343 Industries chose to delay and rework the campaign significantly, re-revealing the single-player component only a couple of weeks back. Despite clear visual improvements, it didn't answer the key question: do we really need an open world Halo? Can a series defined by skilfully crafted combat encounters work in a sandbox format? After going hands-on with preview code, we're optimistic - but there's still significant work to do in polishing the game to perfection.

Feature | Battlefield's ongoing identity crisis could be what saves it this year
Or how Portal looks to be the best part of 2042's package.
The last three nights I've been pottering about with Battlefield 2042's various modes, from traditional Conquest through to the all-new squad-focussed Hazard Zone and the roll-your-own Portal mode editor. What do I make of it? It's near impossible to tell after three nights of action of a game that's all about grand scale and near limitless ways to play (and even harder when we've not seen the progression system or much by way of how the battle pass works, with all specialists and items unlocked from the off in the review build).

Recommended | Football Manager 2022 review - the obsession made real
Under pressure.
Let's get the shameful business out of the way first. Every year on Football Manager, I choose to manage Manchester United. United - or, ahem, Man UFC - are the team I support here in the real world, and that's about as far as my thought process goes when starting up a new FM save. There are two philosophies, basically: the fashionable, hipster choice of managing somewhere a little trendy, a little half-step out of the limelight, an AS Saint-Étienne, maybe, or for a greater challenge someone like AFC Wimbledon or your local ultra-underdogs of choice; or, you manage the team you support. There is technically a third way which we don't speak about (PSG), but broadly speaking, those are your options.

Interview | Halo Infinite: the big interview with 343 Head of Creative Joseph Staten
"This truly is a beta."
Joseph Staten, Head of Creative at 343 Industries, looks knackered as he peers into his webcam. He admits as much. It's early morning in Seattle, where the studio is based, and the second morning after Microsoft released Halo Infinite's multiplayer weeks ahead of the game's street date. It would have made for one hell of a surprise, had it not leaked beforehand.

I'm still searching for a spark in Halo Infinite's campaign
Silent cartography.
Halo Infinite's campaign is about the spaces in-between. Open worlds live or die on those in-between spaces, don't they? What is the value of an open-world littered with objectives that are clearly displayed on a map screen, if there is nothing between the objectives to stumble upon, to lead you off the path of least resistance? What secrets will you uncover on this broken ring, if there is no sense of mystery to their discovery?
