Feature | Part game, part documentary, Svoboda 1945: Liberation teaches about a troubled past
A Czechered history.
I had to learn so much about World War 2 at school I presumed I knew all about it. The Battle of Britain, yep, Dunkirk Spirit, got it. Except, of course, I don't - I don't know all about it. How can I? How can anyone? I know something about it from a British point of view, plus a bit more I've accrued along the way, but this was a world war. There are myriad ways in which myriad communities were, and still are, affected by it, all around the planet. How can I know about all of that? Especially sitting where I'm sitting, in the bounds of Britain. I can't just expect a different perspective to come to me, can I?

Digital Foundry | AI upscaling the classic Metal Gear Solid 2 E3 2000 trailer
Can we remaster one of the best trailers of all time to 4K resolution?
It's a total coincidence of course, but on the day that Metal Gear Solid creator Hideo Kojima muses on Twitter that AI will eventually take over the remastering of old games, Digital Foundry publishes a video that uses machine learning to freshen up the classic MGS2 reveal from E3 2000. For my money the original is one of the greatest game trailers of all-time - and for a number of reasons, opportunities to see this video the way it was meant to be seen are limited, so digging out the best archival version there is and AI-upscaling it was irresistible.

Feature | Xbox Series S teardown: inside Microsoft's smallest ever console
A small form-factor marvel.
Sometimes experimenting with consoles in a non-warranty-friendly manner can go horribly wrong, so consider this piece as a kind of final farewell to my now-deceased Xbox Series S. To be clear, its demise is entirely down to my own ill-advised tinkering and the machine performed well from the day I got it, but at least possessing a dead console opens up the opportunity to examine the internals of Microsoft's junior Xbox in a way we've not been able to before. Pre-launch, I loved the console's form-factor and having now stripped it down to its barebones, I'm even more impressed with the quality of the design. It's a genuine engineering marvel.

Feature | Flying by memory
Visiting a family holiday home in Microsoft Flight Simulator.
In the South of France, about 45 minutes' drive northeast of Avignon, past Carpentras with its medieval walls and its giant superstore its town-consuming market on Fridays, there's a picturesque little village called Le Barroux, piled up on a hill on the edge of the Rhône plain and topped with a chunky, sand-coloured castle, all in classic Provençal style. Behind the village, looming moodily over the scrubby hills and the silent plateaux and the vast apron of busy, fertile flatland, is the solitary, lunar peak of the Mont Ventoux: feared Tour de France stage, géant de Provence, lonely harbinger of the massed ranks of the Alps to the east.
