Digital Foundry | The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword HD is more than just a remaster
Improved graphics are welcome, but it's the gameplay tweaks that make the difference.
A controversial release - even at launch - The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword first released on Wii, arriving at the tail-end of the firm's contentious motion control period. Many believed the game was stuck in the past, a derivative of the Ocarina of Time formula, and the new waggle controls failed to push the series forward. 10 years on, Skyward Sword HD is an opportunity to re-evaluate the game - and for me at least, it has finally clicked. The graphics are improved but really, it's the quality of life improvements that strip out the frustrations and frictions with the original game, letting the core design shine.

Digital Foundry | Spec Analysis: Steam Deck - can it really handle triple-A PC gaming?
The hardware looks good, but the challenges ahead are daunting.
There had been rumours, rumblings and actual, solid reporting of a handheld from Valve for some time now, but the hardware has finally broken cover - and it's looking promising. Steam Deck is built on the same architectural building blocks as the new consoles from Sony and Microsoft, downscaled and refactored for a handheld. With up to 1.6TF of GPU compute power aimed at delivering circa 720p gaming, the idea is to break PC gaming free from the traditional limitations of the PC itself. It's a handheld designed to be as liberating as Nintendo Switch, but tied into the openness and sheer size of the Steam ecosystem.

Digital Foundry | A Plague Tale: Innocence's 60fps upgrade tested - and there's a bonus for Xbox Series owners
Stealth 120Hz support for Microsoft consoles examined.
On the face of it, this particular tech review should be fairly straightforward - Asobo Studio's A Plague Tale: Innocence was one the great sleeper hits of 2019. The custom engine powering it delivers a simply beautiful experience, but like many last-gen titles it was capped to 30fps. The 'next-gen' patch upgrades the game to 60 frames per second, whether you're gaming on PS5 or either of the Xbox Series consoles - but what the developer didn't tell you is that the Microsoft machines also benefit from a stealth 120Hz feature too.
