Death Trash is a silly name, let's get that out of the way. It's a tiny bit Hoxton marketing agency for me, a bit Punk IPA. But do not let that put you off! Death Trash is a looker, in that very vogue, twisted pixel arty kind of way, but it's more than its good looks, and another highlight from a very indie-friendly E3 - and Steam's ongoing Next Fest.

Feature | Rare on Sea of Thieves' massive Pirates of the Caribbean update and getting crossovers right
"It's slightly surreal to be able to talk about it".
One of the more leftfield surprises to come out of this year's E3 (although in hindsight, it's such a natural fit, it shouldn't have been much of a surprise at all), was the announcement that Captain Jack Sparrow would be soon making his way to the Sea of Thieves as part of a mammoth new Pirates of the Caribbean crossover story arc for the swashbuckling multiplayer adventure. And ahead of its arrival this Tuesday, 22nd June, we had chance to chat with Rare to find out more about its impressively ambitious free update.

Feature | NUTS' foley artist Almut Schwacke loves the art of manual sound design
“Making sound yourself is like turning something from 2D into 3D.”
Noodlecake Studios' squirrel surveillance game NUTS stands out in particular for its exemplary art style and the way it sounds - no other game gave me the feeling of being in a forest quite like it. The latter aspect is courtesy of Almut Schwacke. Among her many skills - she's a composer, multi-instrumentalist, singer, sound designer and sound editor - I took a particular interest in foley design. Foley design is not a discipline many of us are familiar with, but it's an integral part of sound design.

Digital Foundry | Metro Exodus Enhanced Edition: how does PS5 compare to Xbox Series X?
Higher resolution vs a more consistent 60fps.
We've already discussed 4A Games' marvellous work on Metro Exodus Enhanced Edition on both PC and Xbox Series consoles, but today we can complete the set as we look at the PlayStation 5 version - and it's an absolute treat. Just like all the other versions of the game, it's using the latest rendition of the 4A Engine, rebuilt from the ground up to support hardware accelerated ray tracing, which is used to deliver phenomenally realistic global illumination. And similar to its console brethren, 60 frames per second is the target. Oh and while it's brand new for PlayStation 5, owners of the PS4 version get a free upgrade.

"We want to spike players' curiosity about the featured locations."
Pottering around a Viking-era version of your home in Assassin's Creed Valhalla is an enormous amount of fun - as I discovered from my adventures in Gloucestershire - but could it also encourage others to visit your country? That's what Tourism Ireland is banking on, as the organisation has teamed up with Ubisoft to use Assassin's Creed Valhalla in a promotional campaign.

Review | Backbone review - a moody narrative noir spoiled by absurdity
Vertibr-eh?
There's a melancholy to Backbone. Like a stale perfume, it permeates everything - the environments, the weather, the dialogue, the music, the story, even the characters' names. It's not out of place, exactly, because at first it fits this pixel-perfect, "post-noir" detective tale, but later, when that tale takes an astonishing and inexplicable turn, it feels disingenuous. A long-con, even. Because what Backbone purports to be is very different to what it really is in the end.
