  1. Judging a game by its cover

Feature | Judging a game by its cover

    Box pop.

You know the old saying, I'm sure, just as if you're of a certain vintage with a passion for a certain medium you'll know it's one that doesn't hold much weight. There was a time, before the internet, before digital storefronts and before bricks and mortar video game shops had crumbled to dust that a cover was all you had to go by, so judge a videogame by it you damn well would. It's one of the reasons game covers of the 80s and 90s popped, and why so many have lingered in our minds over the years since; it's those covers your eyes would return to on the train back as you hungrily tore through cellophane and thumbed through the manual, committing every detail to memory before you'd got the game home.

  6. FPS Boost: brilliant for Xbox gamers but we hope to see more from Series X

Digital Foundry | FPS Boost: brilliant for Xbox gamers but we hope to see more from Series X

Shadow of the Tomb Raider shows the way.

Microsoft jammed its foot down hard on the accelerator pedal with the recent release of 74 (!) additional titles offering FPS Boost support, which sees frame-rate of back-compat Xbox One games doubled - or even quadrupled - for play on the new generation of console hardware. In combination with prior FPS Boost updates, we're now looking at a total of 97 titles available for accelerated play - and the results are generally terrific. 60fps trumps 30fps after all, which can prove transformative. However, there is the sense that the 4K60 dream for Xbox One X titles on Series X remains mostly unfulfilled.

  8. Disco Elysium no longer in Australian Classification Board sin bin

The Australian Classification Board has garnered a reputation for being pretty tight about the games it approves: its refusal to give DayZ the green light over weed resulted in the game being changed worldwide, and Disco Elysium similarly found itself in the firing line earlier this year. Back in March, the board announced that Disco Elysium: The Final Cut was too offensive to go on sale, citing its depiction of drug use, crime and violence as just some of the reasons for the ban.

Hands on with Total War: Warhammer 3's fiery new survival battles

Plus Creative Assembly on its plans for a "much bigger, badder, better experience all round."

Is there a more ridiculous faction in the world of fantasy Warhammer than Chaos? There probably is actually - this is Warhammer after all, land of sneaky rats and lizard folk. It is nothing if not broad. But none of those other myriad factions and races and creeds has the word "Nurgle" in it, does it? So Chaos wins.

  21. Konami's comeback is a welcome deep cut - and perhaps the start of something

Apologies for getting sentimental about nothing more worthy than a corporate logo but still, there's something warming about seeing the Konami logo on boot-up of a new game once again. For all the understandable frustrations about Konami's approach to traditional games in recent years - and even if the company's flat red modern splash screen can't match the iconic dashes of the 90s iteration - it's wonderful to have them back doing something they used to do so very well in the past: making straight-up, hard-edged action games.

  27. Resident Evil Village's PC port is disappointing and needs work

Digital Foundry | Resident Evil Village's PC port is disappointing and needs work

Bugs, glitches and stutters take the sheen away from a great game.

We loved Resident Evil Village on consoles, but unfortunately, my opinion of the PC port isn't quite so positive. On the one hand, I love what the RE Engine is doing technologically and the game itself is fantastic, but on the other hand, I'm genuinely puzzled and disappointed by some of the design choices, bugs, glitches and performance problems. This conversion really isn't where it should be right now.
