Feature | Playing my way closer to nature
Underland, overland, wombling free.
Robert Macfarlane does not write about video games. Not despite, but because of this, I didn't truly understand why Eric Chahi's puzzley exploration of nature, Paper Beast, initially launched as a VR exclusive until I read Macfarlane's book Underland: A Deep Time Journey. In order to explain how and why this happened, I'll need to begin by introducing you to this man and his truly remarkable, unforgettable work.

Feature | King Arthur: A Knight's Tale - it has promise but there's a Lancelot left to do
Sorry, Galahad to.
I really want to like King Arthur: A Knight's Tale, but I find the experience of playing the Steam Early Access release so trudging as to almost be a chore. It's a shame, because there's promise in a lot of the features, and I'm very much on board with the idea of being Mordred, who's usually the villain, chasing down Arthur, who's usually the hero. We're all brought back from the dead - magical stuff: don't ask - and because of it, everything is cast in a graveyard hue, all grey and misty, moody and murky. But what it forgets along the way, or what it doesn't have yet - because I have to remind myself this is early access and there's plenty of time for things to change - is life.

Feature | Grindstone and games that balance luck and skill
I just enjoy seeing what will happen.
Here's an embarrassing confession: when I was a student, I got too far into Bejeweled Blitz. Facebook was new, everyone was on it, and this was the perfect "one more round" game to endlessly procrastinate with. It was a habit that worried me enough to make me become more conscious of my screen time, but now and then a strategy or puzzle game will hit exactly the same notes for me. Might and Magic: Clash of Heroes. Into the Breach. Slay the Spire. Grindstone. Each of them offer me the same satisfaction of surprise chain reactions and the equal possibility for winning and losing.

Feature | Cyberpunk 2077 patch 1.10/1.11 - has the game improved on PS4 and Xbox One?
Stability improvements and bug fixes - but is there anything more?
CD Projekt RED promised a major patch for Cyberpunk 2077 in January and the studio duly delivered, with version 1.10 promising a slew of bug fixes, stability improvements and - for PlayStation 4 at least - the promise of actual performance upgrades. And this is crucial because we have absolutely no doubt whatsoever that crashes can be rectified and glitches removed, but the fundamental issue is this: does last-gen hardware have the horsepower to deliver a consistent level of performance that's much closer to the target 30fps? Performance analysis of version 1.10 gives us optimism in some respects, but there's still a mountain to climb.

Fallout: The Frontier goes offline after modder accused of sharing "animated paedophilic content"
"This will be the final official build pushed for The Frontier."
It's one of the biggest Fallout: New Vegas mods of all time, but Fallout: The Frontier has had a seriously rocky launch since it released on 15th January. After crashing Nexus Mods on launch day and racking up 82k unique downloads, Fallout: The Frontier started to face accusations it was secretly a "fetish mod" - with critics highlighting a number of questionable moments from the mod as examples. Last night, things escalated rather dramatically, as one of the mod developers was ejected from the team for allegedly posting "animated paedophilic content". A few hours later, the entire mod was taken offline.

Feature | On Instagram a great illustrator is turning art into a game
And she's not alone.
I spent some of yesterday morning trying to draw a decent - or at least not entirely terrible - picture of a door handle. I've had this door handle for ages, completely unattached to any kind of door. 20 years ago I found it somewhere and put it in my pocket, and since then - warning: I am boring - it's become sort of a quietly magical object to me. I've kept it on bookshelves or in a funny box under the sofa in all of the houses I've lived in over the last two decades. I think if I ever moved and found that I'd lost it, I would be slightly winded, in a strange, silly way.
