  4. Days Gone: how 60fps transforms the game on PlayStation 5

Days Gone is one of two PlayStation 4 first-party titles we're aware of with some level of PS5 awareness, essentially unlocking frame-rate on Sony's next generation machine, capped only by the 60Hz refresh of your TV. On the face of it, the upgrade is limited in terms of features, but similar to Sucker Punch's PS5 work for Ghost of Tsushima, it is transformative in terms of fluidity and response - and it's a great way to revisit an impressive PS4 game.

If you live in London, New York or another global metropolis, you're probably used to the idea of your local area being represented in big-budget media. But if you're from Gloucestershire, the closest things get is Hot Fuzz. Though the county is frequently used as a filming location, it's rarely the focus of the spotlight, and the list of video games set in Gloucestershire is... rather sparse. All of which meant I was shocked to discover that Gloucestershire is not only visitable in Assassin's Creed: Valhalla, but that it boasts its own storyline.

  19. What does magic mean to you?

Feature | What does magic mean to you?

    Stupefied.

Magic. Have you ever really considered what it means? We're told what it means a lot, especially in games. We're told it means fireballs and lightning bolts and turning people into sheep. But is that really magic, or is it simply a term used to describe something we've become accustomed to? It's a thought that's been nagging at me.

Metal Gear Solid, perhaps, the game that made hiding in cardboard boxes an acceptable activity for tactical espionage agents? Maybe even Spy vs Spy, that old school multiplayer game in which you laid traps to ensnare your rival?

  29. Is Doom Eternal the most ambitious Switch port yet?

Digital Foundry | Is Doom Eternal the most ambitious Switch port yet?

The id Tech 7 engine is designed to scale into next-gen - but can it run on a handheld console?

There's no question about it - Doom Eternal is a remarkably impressive technical achievement. The id Tech 7 engine delivers exceptionally high-quality visuals at a smooth 60 frames per second across the full range of PlayStation and Xbox consoles. We witnessed a boost in texture quality, geometry density and world scale. It's a game that really demonstrates the full potential of these machines, while laying the technological foundation for the next generation. In theory, this should make a potential Switch conversion of the game even more challenging than prior Panic Button ports of id Tech titles and yet, there's a good argument here in saying that this the talented developer's most impressive work yet.
