  3. What makes a Chinese game?

Feature | What makes a Chinese game?

    Road to cultural authenticity.

After staying seemingly closed off for many years, 2020 is looking like the year Chinese games break out onto the global market. There's first-person shooter/slasher Bright Memory, which not only left early access earlier this year but is also being developed into a full-length game, while early footage of next-gen action game Black Myth: Wukong was enough to generate buzz around the world. The biggest success however belongs to Genshin Impact, already the biggest global launch for a Chinese game ever, with over $100 million revenue reported within two weeks of release. If these are signs of a trend, then Chinese developers are in for a bright new dawn of premium-quality games.

  7. Empire of Sin review - intoxicating but overwhelming

There's a lot to like about this 1920s gangster sim. It's an intricately detailed game about a romanticised time. And as you would expect, it has gangsters in fedoras and fur coats and flapper gear, and Tommy guns and knuckle dusters and baseball bats. Those curvy old cars and delivery trucks rumble down the cobbled, often rain-slicked streets. And behind the mundane facades of everyday life - the grocery stores and laundry houses - the illicit industries roar. Speakeasies jump with music and laughter while breweries bubble in an effort to keep up. And you can see it all in gorgeous detail, right down to the fug from the cigar smoke and the glow from the lanterns.

  10. Star Wars: The Old Republic players hold memorial service for Darth Vader actor David Prowse

  11. Immortals Fenyx Rising is a messy mash-up of the best Nintendo and Ubisoft games this generation

I liked the name Gods and Monsters. It was a bit plain, perhaps, but pulpy and straightforward. You knew what you were getting. It suggested some big godly powers and even bigger mythical beasts to whack them with, all set in a fantasy Ancient Greece. This would have been fine, I suppose. But it's clear from a few hours' play that Ubisoft has grander ideas, and that after a lengthy delay, some re-working and a new 3rd December release date, the game now known as Immortals Fenyx Rising wants to be something quite a bit bigger.

  12. Godfall: a beautiful but hollow action RPG

As you glide about its burnished hallways, flitting from one glittering, cavernous hall to the next, it's hard not to be impressed by the pomposity of Godfall. Its opening is unapologetically ostentatious in a way that's somehow both majestic and faintly repellent, like an ageing casino decorated by a man who thinks he has taste.

  13. Football Manager 2021 review - a world-beating sim, better than ever

I'm writing this after losing my first game of the season. I'm managing United, as always - I'm an 'always manage the team you support' kind of FM player, as opposed to your Bundesliga hipsters or local club saviours, whom I have infinite admiration for but not a shred of envy - and of all teams to finally collapse against, I've lost away to Liverpool.

  19. Assassin's Creed Valhalla patch 1.0.4: Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5 re-tested

Digital Foundry | Assassin's Creed Valhalla patch 1.0.4: Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5 re-tested

Plus: 4K quality modes and Series S 60fps tested.

Thursday's 1.0.4 patch for Assassin's Creed Valhalla is the first big update for Ubisoft's latest massive open worlder - and a crucial one, delivering a vast array of gameplay improvements and bug fixes, but of course, the Digital Foundry focus is more on technical validation for what has been the most contentious of the next generation launch line-up. For all of its spec advantages, Xbox Series X ran with a performance penalty against PlayStation 5, while Xbox Series S launched without the signature next-gen 60fps support. The 1.0.4 patch aims to address of all of this - and indeed, it does - and also adds a 4K30 quality mode too.

  21. Looking for the old Souls within Bluepoint's Demon's Souls remake

Feature | Looking for the old Souls within Bluepoint's Demon's Souls remake

It's the highlight of the PS5 launch line-up, but what exactly has changed this time out?

Bluepoint Games' reimagining of Demon's Souls is the highest-rated launch game on PS5, and understandably so. The Austin studio has done a fantastic job of bringing its interpretation of Demon's Souls to Sony's brand-new console, furnishing its remake of a cult classic with mod-cons like a fully-featured photo mode, two different graphical options - and, of course, graphics to die for. Still, it's fascinating to note some of the things Bluepoint had creative license to change when remaking Demon's Souls - and to ask whether some elements of the original design have been lost in translation.
