  4. Assassin's Creed Valhalla keeps sending players to assassinate training dummies

Earlier this week, mid-way through one of my Valhalla sessions, I got a bit of a shock when one of my daily assassination targets popped up right next to me in Ravensthorpe. My blood ran cold. A dangerous thief in the settlement? Right here, next to the frolicking children? Things could be about to get messy.

  6. The best launch titles ever: Pokémon Dash on the DS

Pokémon Dash is one of those games that makes you say, 'Someone made that? Really? Why?' The answer is that Nintendo were releasing the Nintendo DS and they most likely wanted a Pokémon title in the launch lineup to boost sales, so Pokémon Dash was born. The game's premise is simple - you're a Pokémon, there are races, you run in said races, try to win and hopefully avoid the lava, because there are no regulations in Pokémon races.

  7. Sackboy: A Big Adventure - how Sony tackles the generational divide

Digital Foundry | Sackboy: A Big Adventure - how Sony tackles the generational divide

See how a PS5 launch game transitions across to PS4 and Pro.

From my perspective, no console launch is truly complete without an excellent platform game and thankfully, Sony and developer Sumo Digital deliver exactly that for PlayStation 5 with Sackboy: A Big Adventure. It's a beautiful game, and a fascinating example of how one developer aims to straddle the generational divide - while Sackboy champions the power of PlayStation 5, there's also support for PS4 and PS4 Pro too. The question is, has Sumo Digital delivered the kind of magic we expect from a platform exclusive next-gen launch title but at the same time still deliver a good experience for owners of existing PlayStation hardware?

  12. The best launch titles ever: Ridge Racer on PlayStation

There are some games whose first encounters with you'll always remember. For me - and I'm sure for many others - it's Ridge Racer. First contact was made the summer of 1994 in a Hastings arcade, a whole week spent pushing 20p pieces into a machine that felt like it had been transported from some shiny new future (later that same week I'd get laughed out of a seafront dance record shop when I asked if they had any copies of Shinji Hosoe's incredible soundtrack).

  15. Give Eivor a fancy new hairdo with this Assassin's Creed Valhalla mod

The world of Assassin's Creed Valhalla is filled with varied and extravagant hairstyles - unless you're Eivor, in which case most of these are off limits. Valhalla gives you a fairly small selection of Viking-approved haircuts which you can unlock and purchase by expanding your settlement, and even if you want to try out some Anglo-Saxon styles 'dos inspired by your time in England, you're normally stuck with your Nordic hairstyles. Until now, that is, as the inevitable customisation mod has arrived.

  18. Watch Dogs: Legion - essentially identical on PS5 and Xbox Series X

Digital Foundry | Watch Dogs: Legion - essentially identical on PS5 and Xbox Series X

While Series S sees hardware ray tracing effects for the first time.

Featuring a beautifully rendered open world recreating one of the world's most iconic cities, while leaning heavily into hardware accelerated ray tracing, Watch Dogs: Legion is one of the most technically ambitious games for the current cross generation period. The cross-platform comparison between the next generation machines isn't the most interesting head-to-head we've seen so far - PS5 and Xbox Series X are very, very close - but it's great to see ray traced reflections appear on Xbox Series S. Yes, we're getting hardware RT on a £250/$250 console.

  27. The best launch titles ever: Super Monkey Ball on GameCube

From Duck Hunt to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Nintendo is the undisputed king of the launch game. Two of its console debuts, Super Mario World and Super Mario 64, can lay claim to being among the greatest games ever made; Wii Sports is the fourth best-selling game of all time. So it is a delicious irony that the best launch game for the GameCube was made not by Nintendo but by its old arch-rival Sega - indeed, it was one of Sega's first releases as a third-party publisher. Revenge? Truce? Either way it was poignant.
