Feature | Alternate controllers in a world we can't touch

    A connection is made.

With Covid-19's devastating effects on travel, public movement, and basic physicality, video games have become a much-needed outlet for people to maintain a sense of connection and creativity. 7. Someone should make a game about: the Chinese underworld

As a Chinese kid growing up in Singapore, visiting Haw Par Villa - a cultural theme park and national treasure - is a rite of passage, both anticipated and feared, because of its infamously graphic dioramas depicting Diyu, or the Chinese underworld. Built in 1937 by the founder of Tiger Balm, Aw Boon Haw, the park celebrates Chinese mythology in all its gory glory. Its crown attraction - The Ten Courts of Hell - lay out a dramatic timeline of judgment, penance, and redemption through its aging statuary.

  8. Paradise Killer review - dreamy open-world investigation meets cosmic horror

Paradise Killer's breezily cheerful trailer is only telling half the truth. It most certainly is a colourful, sometimes goofy investigatory adventure in the vein of Phoenix Wright, but it's also weird, a dizzyingly high-concept descent into the menace of the unknown, where balmy afternoons and beach-side cocktails co-exist with genuinely disquieting cosmic nightmares from beyond the stars.

  14. We're not kidding: Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1+2 is one of the best games of the generation

Digital Foundry | We're not kidding: Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1+2 is one of the best games of the generation

Classic titles shine brighter than ever on modern hardware.

A franchise icon that fell on hard times, Tony Hawk's Pro Skater had a huge impact on gaming across the generations until somehow, it lost its edge - and its relevance, with the abysmal THPS5 in particular hammering the final nails into the coffin. However, while the original game is over 20 years old now, there's still magic there and I'm astonished by what developer Vicarious Visions has delivered with its remake of the first two series entries. I'll put it quite plainly: for my money, Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1+2 is one of the best games of the year and it's my personal favourite release from Activision across the entire console generation. It really is that good.

  24. Crysis Remastered: this is what ray tracing looks like on consoles

Digital Foundry | Crysis Remastered: this is what ray tracing looks like on consoles

An impressive technical feat for Xbox One X and PS4 Pro.

The release of Crysis Remastered draws closer and today we can reveal a technical feature of the console versions that we simply didn't believe possible just a few short months ago - the implementation of real-time ray-traced reflections. In a console game? Really? You can cut to the chase by checking out the embedded video below to see this technology in action on Xbox One X, but the fact is that via clever optimisations, the software-driven RT found in Crytek's Neon Noir demo has been optimised for Microsoft and Sony's enhanced consoles - and it looks very, very impressive.

  28. Inertial Drift review - a unique and exhilarating arcade racer

What's the best drift in the world of racing games? Maybe it's the blue-blooded pair of Out Run, with its stick-induced shift that broke a thousand arcade cabinets, and OutRun 2, with its majestic arcs. Or perhaps it's something more modern - Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit with its big-bottomed supercars, or Burnout which helped birth Criterion's particularly weighty take on the artform. Whatever your own pick might be, I'd like to introduce a new contender to the debate: allow me to introduce Inertial Drift, a novel and exquisite thing.
