  1. Frostpunk: On the Edge review - pressure from a different perspective

To me, Frostpunk is a game about pressure, it provides the context for everything you do. What you build depends on where you're being stretched thinnest. Are you running out of coal? Research and improve your coal production. Are you out of food? Do the same for food. Has the temperature dropped and you need better insulation? You'd better hurry up because it definitely isn't getting any warmer. It never lets up. When you think you've solved one problem, Frostpunk provides another two, and every time it does, it dangles a horrid solution in front of you.

  5. Wasteland 3 review: a devilish satire of post-apocalyptic America

Before Wasteland 3 begins, the developers at inXile Entertainment present the player with a message. "Wasteland 3 is a work of fiction," we're told. "Ideas, dialogue, and stories we created early in development have in some cases been mirrored by our current reality. Our goal is to present a game of fictional entertainment, and any correlation to real-world events is purely coincidental."

  17. No Straight Roads review - a quirky but overly simplistic action-adventure

When I met Wan Hazmer and Daim Dziauddin, founders of No Straight Roads developer Metronomik, at EGX Rezzed last year, I was immediately taken with the great story behind the game. Not only did the two want to release a homegrown Malaysian game and thus support their local game industry, but they also envisioned rhythm gaming as something more than following cursors and pressing buttons to the beat. One loves rock, the other is more into EDM, and thus Vinyl City was born, a place where a lone rock band takes on an evil EDM empire.

  20. Train sims have come a long way since I got cautioned for tooting in public

I've only ever been handed one police caution, and it was for playing a train sim. Back when I was a lot younger and a whole lot sillier I imported a PSP as soon as it came out in Japan, alongside launch essentials Ridge Racer, Lumines and - just because - Densha de Go! 2, which soon became the default way to show off my new toy. Which is exactly what I was doing in Greenwich Park when I was showing it off to a friend who was so impressed that he rammed the thing up as loud as it would go while tooting the train's horn, rolling around in laughter because I think he'd had a bit of a toot himself beforehand, until some passing policemen expressed their displeasure at our behaviour. And that's the boring story of how I got done for disturbing the peace with a PSP, and for tooting in public.

  21. Project Cars 3 review - an effective new direction for the broadest racing series around

Project Cars 3 is an odd one. As it's ever been with this series, really - Slightly Mad by name, totally bonkers by nature you might say of the developer - but this third outing for one of the the most expansive racing games on the market is the wackiest yet, jettisoning sim staples such as tire wear and fuel usage for something that's laser-focussed on the Forza Motorsport crowd. So is it a sim or isn't it? After a couple of dozen hours with it, I'm not entirely sure myself, and fairly certain I don't really care - whatever this is, it's an awful lot more fun than its predecessors.

  22. Someone should make a game about: wheelchair mobilisation

Games are great for allowing players to experience different perspectives. And I have some ideas about different perspectives in general. Wheelchairs need to be reinvented and celebrated as independence equipment rather than used as a prop in horror stories. Games would be perfect for this.

  28. I played Amazon's MMO New World yesterday and was pleasantly surprised

I was encouraged after playing Amazon's New World MMO yesterday. A few things grabbed me. One, it was much more robust than I'd expected - I realise we were in a fairly controlled testing environment but it handled a 50 versus 50 battle without any kind of hitch. Two, it did it all while running believable collision detection on the server which made a real difference in battle. Three, it was very handsome and the spell effects were wonderful. Four, it was fun. And five, it didn't feel as out of date as I thought a fairly traditional MMO, in 2020, would.
