From Aliens to Cyberpunk via the Mass Effect arc.
Having played a critical role in the production of 1982's Blade Runner, illustrator Syd Mead was asked what title he'd like to appear as in the film's end credits. "Visual Futurist" was his reply. Now there's a job role you'd enjoy explaining to people at parties. Mead was a modern-day farseer, using his skills as an industrial designer and concept artist to build the worlds of tomorrow. What's more, his visualisations have had an immeasurable impact on video games and the many artists working within the industry.

Feature | Deathtrap Dungeon doesn't get the most out of its star actor
"And how shall I think of you?"
Eddie Marsan was brilliant in the BBC adaptation of Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell, playing the conservative magician bringing magic back to 19th century England. He has a fearsome intensity under his mousy appearance. Watch it, you'll like it - or better yet read the book it's based on, it's even better.

Recommended | Journey to the Savage Planet review - a genuinely funny toybox to explore
It's out of this world.
The first time I throw down a cannister of GROB, I'm not entirely sure what it is. As it explodes into a satisfying puddle of goo, the exotic creatures around me - my scanner tells me they're Pufferbirds and they "like, love me": it's already reciprocal - screech a joyful, if alien, screech and waddle straight to it. Awed, I waddle right after them.

Review | Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot review - a celebration of the anime dragged down by subpar side content
Not quite Tien out of Tien.
Playing Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot is a battle. It's a fistfight between the part of me who loves Dragon Ball and the part of me with a more critical eye. Every time I think one side will come out on top, the other screams for 30 seconds, their hair starts glowing, and the tides quickly turn. During my time with Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot, I've often found myself torn between these two perspectives, either grinning during high-intensity moments or sighing due to the dull repetition that plagues large portions of this otherwise enjoyable title.

Feature | 10 years later, Mass Effect 2's Suicide Mission is BioWare at the top of its game
Assuming direct control.
Mass Effect 2's final location - the Collector Base sat beyond its Omega-4 Relay - sits on screen from the moment you first fire up the game. In the distance, burnt debris circles a black hole's accretion disc: a graveyard of spaceship wrecks slowly being drawn toward their final deaths. It's an ominous sight - and a signpost to where you will also be drawn, pulled towards this place just as inevitably for the game's beautifully designed final moments - its Suicide Mission.

Feature | 198X is one of the most stylish games you can get for the Switch
Ready player fun.
I'll admit to being a bit sniffy at first about 198X, which first came out on PC last year and has just recently made its way to Nintendo's Switch. It's another 80s-inspired coming-of-age tale that leans heavily on what's now a very well-worn brand of nostalgia - a mish-mash of Spielbergian sweetness, on-the-nose references and a synthwave soundtrack. So yeah, I was cynical, but good lord would you just look at this thing.

Digital Foundry | Cooly Skunk: how a lost Super NES game was miraculously recovered via satellite download
And how it compares against the revamped PS1 release.
Cooly Skunk, Punky Skunk - this long forgotten platforming mascot character went by a couple of different names during his short life in late 90s gaming - but as of last week, he's suddenly become a lot more interesting. Originally released on the original PlayStation, it turns out that the same game was initially developed for the Super Famicon. More specifically, it was developed, completed, but never physically released and seemingly lost - until the combination of a freak discovery combined with the efforts of the game preservation community brought this title back from oblivion.
