Last-minute upgrades allow overclocked models to face RTX 2060.
AMD continues its focus on the entry-level space with the release of the Radeon RX 5600 XT, a graphics card intended to sit between the RX 5500 XT and RX 5700 with strong 1080p performance at $279. Digital Foundry | Xbox Series X rear port set-up revealed in new prototype leak
And this time it looks genuine.
New images of the Xbox Series X's casing have appeared online, giving us our strongest indication yet of what kind of input and output ports are found on the rear of the machine. The legacy HDMI input from the TVTVTVTV era is gone, replaced with a rather more mundane arrangement of USB ports, Toslink, Ethernet and a curious non-identified mystery port.

Fortnite's TikTok competition for a new emote is underway
Rock around the clock.
Wow, that's a lot of Gen Z words in a headline - but I suppose it's what you'd expect from Fortnite, which is now searching for its next great emote on TikTok. I guess that makes a change from merely lifting them from, well, almost anything.

Digital Foundry | Doom Eternal hands-on: can id's next game possibly live up to expectations?
New tech and a revamp in structure deliver a highly promising sequel.
Three hours of solid play with a preview build of Doom Eternal? I just couldn't couldn't pass up the opportunity. For me, Doom 2016 marked id Software's return to form and in my opinion, it's one of finest shooters of the last decade. So with that in mind, expectations were positively stratospheric for the sequel and after my session with the sequel, I've got to say that I'm feeling good about it. Much has changed since the reboot, both in terms of the game's structure and thanks to the transition across to the new id Tech 7 engine.

Cyberpunk 2077 is Funko Pop's latest victim
Looks a bit CD.
I walked into a HMV store over Christmas (one of the few remaining ones, anyway) - and on entering was greeted by rows upon rows of Funko Pop toys: their black, unthinking, lifeless eyes staring right back at me. Soon to join their ranks are the characters of Cyberpunk 2077, who have been converted into little plastic figures ready to sit on your desk. Staring.

Fire Emblem: Three Houses' next DLC finally unites the house leaders
If only temporarily.
Wouldn't it be nice if we could all just get along? In the main story of Fire Emblem: Three Houses, this unfortunately isn't the case. Not everyone sees eye to eye on some rather big topics, and while you can recruit most characters to your house, you can only play with one house leader at a time.

Feature | Super Crush KO is candy-coloured brawling that's perfect for a January commute
I found my drill.
Super Crush KO, by Vertex Pop, is one of those games that looks and feels fantastic. It's a 2D brawler, in which a kidnapped kitty sends you into battle against a bunch of alien nasties, and it's delivered in dreamy cocktail pinks and purples, flat colours referencing the glory days of Flash gaming, perhaps, while the controls are wonderfully responsive and the battle arenas are nice and snug.

Feature | Like animals, video game AI is stupidly intelligent
Intelligently stupid.
We tend to think of real and virtual spaces as being worlds apart, so why is it that I can't stop seeing an octopus arm in 2007's spectacular Dead Space 'Drag Tentacle,' the alien appendage of developmental hell? Beyond surface xeno-weirdness, it's what clever animation and the neural marvel have in common that has me interested. Since an octopus arm is infinitely flexible, it faces a unique challenge. How do you move an arm to set x,y,z coordinates and a certain orientation if it has infinite degrees of freedom in which to do it? How might the octopus arm tackle its virtual cousin's task of going to grab the player when they could be anywhere in the room - free even to move as the animation is first playing?

Feature | Song of Horror is a quietly inventive homage to survival horror's glory days
Not so Silent Hill.
What does safety sound like in a game? We spend a lot of time as players thrilling over compositions and effects that get the adrenaline flowing - spectral piano, frantic violins, ambient mitherings that might, if you're very lucky, just be a broken aircon - but what about the compositions and effects that soothe and reassure? The Resident Evil series is full of them: bundle together every last Save Room melody and you've got a half-decent yoga playlist, though I'd probably chuck in some Okami or whatever to lift the mood. Gears of War has that satisfied guitar purr when you've winkled out every last Locust. The Sunless games have their port themes, wafted to you from off-screen like smoke on the breeze - music indeed to the captain coasting home on their last few lumps of coal.
