Feature | Always on Edge: my life with Jason Brookes
One man's impact on the best gaming mag of the 1990s.
In the autumn of 1995, I interviewed for a writing position on Edge magazine. I had no experience in publishing; I'd spent a year since leaving university writing manuals and design documents for the developer Big Red Software, but I was desperate to be a journalist. Although I hadn't read Edge that much, everyone I worked with treated it like a holy text. It felt like a long shot. Then Jason Brookes turned up late for my interview, was friendly but distracted throughout, and at the end set me a writing task before disappearing completely. I assumed I had failed. Over a month later however, he called me and offered me a job. This was my first inkling that Jason had his own way of working.

Aerith, Leon, and Yuffie make an appearance, too.
Only last week, director Tetsuya Nomura told us he was unable to share a release date for Kingdom Hearts 3's Re:Mind DLC because "people would get mad at him". Fast-forward seven days, however, and a new teaser on Square Enix's YouTube channel finally reveals one: 23rd January 2020, for PlayStation 4, and 25th February for Xbox One.

Video | Oculus exclusive combat racer, Death Lap feels like a bit of a false start
Watch the Rift and Quest versions in action in this week's VR Corner.
Like an unexpected blue shell from Mario Kart, Death Lap seems to have come from out of nowhere and crashed onto the front page Oculus store. Unlike the blue shell though, the impact of this one feels a bit limp and after playing it for over an hour, I'm less than impressed with the vehicular mayhem on offer.

Digital Foundry | Halo: Reach's remaster is OK - but key improvements are required
PC and Xbox One versions of the Master Chief Collection remaster analysed in depth.
This week's arrival of Halo: Reach on Xbox One, Windows Store and Steam is a highly significant release. Nine years after its Xbox 360 debut, it has finally been added to the Master Chief Collection with all last-gen Bungie and 343 titles now available to Xbox One users. It's also available on PC as part of a scheduled, episodic roll-out of Halo titles - and it's the first full franchise release to hit the platform since 2004. It's a big deal then, but how does it improve on the original and are there any problems with the conversion?

Digital Foundry | The Touryst is stunning - and one of the best Switch games of 2019
Defying expectations.
Quietly revealed in August, The Touryst from Shin'en Multimedia recently arrived on Nintendo Switch and quickly left a strong impression. With its voxelised design, smooth frame-rate and unique gameplay, it's unlike anything the team has worked on to date - and I think it's one of my favourite Switch releases of 2019. Beneath its stylised but relatively simplistic visual design lies one of the Switch's most capable graphics engines - a game that basically never deviates from its target 60fps and never makes you wait more than a second. It's fast, it's beautiful and it's worth checking out.

Recommended | Life is Strange 2 review - a bolder, more mature sequel that's a different kind of animal
My brother's a keeper.
When Life is Strange 2's first episode launched, its differences seemed to define it. It was a road trip game, where the first Life is Strange had been so focused on a particular place. It featured a far smaller recurring cast, without the familiar faces who had helped flesh out Arcadia Bay. And it was about two brothers, their relationship defined by a difference in age as well as special abilities. It felt a lonelier experience, one slightly harder to warm to, with a central relationship which at times felt more like work than friendship. Ultimately, each of these differences has helped Life is Strange 2 stand out as something unique, truthful and necessary.
