Recommended | John Wick Hex review - sweet economy
It's got his name on it.
It all clicked when I got really stuck. I wasn't sure about John Wick Hex at first. I was put off by the lankiness of the art style, where shoulders are quarterback broad and the arms and legs seem to travel for miles. I was put off by the end-of-level replays that squish your brainteaser battles down to a few staccato seconds, with little in the way of cinematic zip. There's John Wick, right in the middle of the screen, blandly double-tapping away as an endless collection of what look like fancy waiters and up-market estate agents pile in on him. Business as usual, but the whole thing didn't truly feel very Wickian.

Recommended | Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair review - a brilliant and better follow-up
Bee plus.
The original Yooka-Laylee quite rightly had its eyes set on the past. Pitched as a tribute to retro 3D platformers, Playtonic's debut was made by veterans who helped define the genre for diehard fans who helped fund the game's massive Kickstarter campaign. The result was suitably bright and nostalgic, if a little scrappy, with solid enough foundations Playtonic has built on brilliantly for this follow-up. Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair finds the buddy duo in a modern 2D platformer that feels, in comparison, like it was made specifically for today.

Recommended | Grid review - a slim, muscular and magnificent arcade racer
Torque sport.
The name does it no favours at all. Back when the first Grid launched, it had the Race Driver appendage, marking it out as a successor of sorts to Codemasters' long-running, much-loved series, itself with foundations in the even more beloved brace of TOCA games for the original PlayStation. This, though, was a more fantastical take on motorsport, with a few extra bulges under the bonnet and an American twang that only became even more pronounced with 2013's disappointing sequel - a sort of Michael Bay does motorsport affair that never really seemed sure of what exactly it wanted to be.

Recommended | Concrete Genie review - a bright and thoughtful exploration of some dark and difficult themes
Take my Monet.
Ever since its announcement at 2017's Paris Games Week, PlayStation exclusive Concrete Genie has been nothing short of intriguing. The setting, the stunning art style, the artistic game play - this an ambitious game for Pixel Opus, a studio of university graduates whose only other title is Entwined, but that ambition has served them well. Concrete Genie is everything I hoped it would be.

Hitting the Rokkaku-dai Heights.
Almost two decades of playing a game, off and on, should leave you with a pretty good idea of what you love about it. But Jet Set Radio Future is different. I love it, almost beyond all other games. Recommended | Trine 4 review: the biggest and best Trine yet
Fourth Trine's the charm.
Trine 4 is a game I didn't know I wanted until it was on the screen before me. Three Trine games was more Trine than I ever thought I'd need, and given the title it seemed fitting to end the series as a trilogy, even if the last one was a bit duff. Trine 4 sounds like a Douglas Adams joke, only humour has never been Frozenbyte's strong point.
