  10. Control on console is brilliant - as long as you play on the right hardware

Digital Foundry | Control on console is brilliant - as long as you play on the right hardware

Getting to the bottom of the game's reported frame-rate problems.

How well does Remedy's latest blockbuster, Control, stack up on consoles? Let's make no bones about it - the game is brilliant and a stunning technological showcase. It works on the Sony and Microsoft boxes, but the game reaches another level on PC, with Control featuring one of the most impressive DXR ray tracing implementations we've seen. In marketing the game, Remedy and publisher 505 have pushed PC to the forefront, to the extent where not much was seen of the console versions prior to launch. Our verdict so far? The game is worth checking out but there are performance issues and some of them can be show-stopping, depending on the hardware you're gaming on.

  11. Man of Medan review - an undersized but accomplished naval horror story

The thing I liked best about Until Dawn - Peter Stormare's pop-eyed turn as your personal psychiatrist aside - was that it kept you guessing about the kind of horror game it was. Teen slasher flick or Paranormal Activity wannabe? Creature feature or Machiavellian revenge fable? Cabin in the woods, or mountain of madness? The game's red herrings are as plentiful as the branching plot's butterfly effects, and it's a delight to sift direction from misdirection as you slowly divide the offensively photogenic cast into victims or survivors over 12 hours of play.

I was on the bus the other day when I realised that Ancestors was probably starting to get to me. I found myself thinking about haircuts. About hairstyles. Looking at all the different ways of dealing with hair that were evident around me. Why do we do this? I wondered. The fringe, the pony, the pompadour. Why do we do this with our fur?

Marcus Lehto talks transhumanism and dystopian sci-fi worlds.

In its very first teaser trailer, it was hard to tell exactly what Disintegration was about. Showcasing a shiny levitating vehicle, my mind immediately jumped to pod-racing, and I assumed the game would be a fairly light-hearted shooter with some cool technology.

  27. Wreckfest review - a true successor to the brilliant Destruction Derby

Wreckfest is, quite simply, the best Flatout game to date. We thought as much last year when it released on PC, and having spent a while with the console versions that opinion hasn't changed a bit - if anything, it's lovely to have Bugbear's brilliance back on console where it belongs. This review is from the PC version last year, and very much still applies to this week's console release - though be warned that load times are excruciatingly long on Xbox One and PS4, and even playing on an Xbox One X you're going to be falling well short of 60fps. They're small, noticeable problems that are a shame, but don't detract from the greatness on offer here.

Recommended | Control review: Mid-century postmodernism

    Out-of-office experience.

It spoils nothing, I hope, to reduce a game as luxurious and uncanny as Control to just four words. Here goes, then: Hell is an office. Remedy's latest takes place inside the Oldest House, the austere, echoing and inhumanly vast headquarters of the Federal Bureau of Control. The FBC is an agency that deals with unusual horrors and is, as of your arrival, in the process of being overwhelmed by them.

  30. Knights and Bikes review - a heartfelt action-adventure that's best enjoyed together

Sometimes you find out who's behind a newly-announced game and you know you'll be in good hands. Knights and Bikes developer Foam Sword consists of Moo Yu and Rex Crowle, both ex-Media Molecule staff with experience on titles such as LittleBigPlanet and Tearaway. Who better to make a game about two girls who explore the nooks and crannies of a small Cornish island in search of a mythical treasure?
