Feature | Five Polish indie games (and one from the Czech Republic) to keep an eye on
Hungry babies! Counter-terrorism! Competitive book fights! Genetics altering!
We know about Poland's biggest games but the tide there is rising for everyone, and the indie scene has been gathering steam for a while. Devolver's Carrion is a case in point: I saw this last year at a conference in Poland and now loads of people are talking about it after seeing it at E3. It looks great. With that in mind, I returned to Polish conference Digital Dragons this year, determined to share with you the indie games I saw there.

Digital Foundry | Bloodstained is unmissable - but the Switch version needs a lot of work
One of the best games of the year on all other platforms.
Originally launching via Kickstarter, Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night is one of the most successful games in crowd-funded history. It is a game that may not have existed without the support of the community yet, like so many others, the road of completion was long and fraught with challenges - but the game has arrived and perhaps against the odds, it's good. Seriously good. From a personal perspective, the final result exceeds my very high expectations.

"We need to find better ways of working."
Blizzard would not be where it currently is without periods of overwork or "crunch", the company's now-departed co-founder Mike Morhaime told Eurogamer at Gamelab this week. However, he feels that this way of working is "not sustainable" and that the industry as a whole is moving away from it.

Feature | Valleys Between is a puzzle game that obeys tree-time
Into the woods.
Valleys Between is the sort of game that's so beautiful I would probably play it even if it wasn't any good. I'd play it just to look at it, listen to it, be around its world and its art. Happily, it is good. Part tactical game, part curious bucolic spin on the endless runner, I have never played anything that combines its various parts in such a way. And there's more.

Digital Foundry | Crash Team Racing: Switch gets another classy kart racer
And it compares nicely to PS4 and Xbox One.
The best thing about the Switch port of Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled on Switch is that it's often easy to forget you're even playing on a handheld. Switch delivers a genuine contender in the search for a definitive release of this remake: you get a 30fps kart racer with every track included - just like PS4 and Xbox One - along with the option to play on the go. Of course, there are cutbacks in current-gen comparisons - most noticeable when playing docked - but this is an accomplished port nonetheless.

How Insomniac stole the heart of Spider-Man
Game director Ryan Smith on taking your first swing at a comicbook adaptation.
Marvel's Spider-Man is probably the finest licensed game adaptation of the past decade, its lead at once every inch the lycra-clad tumbler you might recall from comics and movies, and a creature only Insomniac could have created. In a panel at Gameslab today, game director Ryan Smith took attendees through the making of the game's traversal and combat systems, explaining how they contribute to the portrayal as much as its cutscenes and writing.

Feature | UK games industry gender pay gap report shows progress, but companies must do more
"They could train more women to come into senior roles, which is something generally the industry is pretty crap at."
Last month, large game studios in the UK were required to submit their annual gender pay gap data for the second year since the government initiative began in 2018. It's the first time we've been able to compare statistics between years, and from a surface-level reading, things are not looking great. In the 19 biggest games-related companies in the UK, the overall median gap widened by 3.5 per cent, and the game industry's median wage gap of 18.8 per cent remains significantly higher than the national average of 9.6 (via GamesIndustry.biz).
