  3. After an hour playing it, Control seems extraordinary

I think maybe the number one rule about anything made by David Lynch is that you should never write about anything made by David Lynch. I'm going to break that rule - just quickly I promise - to say there was a moment that felt straight out of the Lynchian playbook in the Control demo I played at E3, and it was wonderful.

  4. The big Cyberpunk 2077 interview: multiplayer, next-gen, and Keanu Reeves

With, perhaps, less competition than in previous years, Cyberpunk 2077 has once again stolen the show at E3 2019. Stamping its presence on the event with the reveal of both Keanu Reeves and a solid release date during Microsoft's Xbox press conference last weekend, CD Projekt's role-player impressed again during its second hands-off gameplay demo - even if it did feel much more like a video game and less like magic this time around.

  5. Final Fantasy 7 Remake plays as elegantly as it looks

Before this year's E3, I doubted Square Enix's ability to actually make good on its promises for Final Fantasy 7 Remake. The trailers seemed too polished, too beautiful to be something a studio could actually deliver; they promised an impossible dream, not a video game.

  16. Borderlands 3 is fine

    Borderlands 3 is fine

    Night at the Mozeium.

Well, I don't know what to tell you. Borderlands 3 is very Borderlands, as I discovered in a hands-on session at E3 earlier today. While there's nothing really wrong with Borderlands 3 - it's essentially a more polished version of its predecessors - it's so far failed to satisfy my desire for compelling new gameplay additions. Where Borderlands 2 brought genuinely innovative contributions to the table, Borderlands 3 is playing it safe - and it's starting to feel like the series is playing catch-up with the rest of the industry. It's not the end of the world, but more a missed opportunity.

  17. We've seen another 50 minutes of Cyberpunk 2077 gameplay - is it cyberpunk yet?

Cyberpunk 2077 very much has a presence at E3 this year - but it's also very much the same as it was the year before. Cool Keanu aside, there wasn't much new in what was shown to the public in the Xbox conference, and there wasn't any gameplay at all.

  19. Nintendo's off-kilter approach to the generation game just let it storm E3

Nintendo's always marched to its own beat - it's what makes the company so fascinating, and just as often so frustrating. Sometimes that approach falters, sometimes it soars, and this week's E3 was a prime example of the latter. As the rest of the industry attempted the awkward - arguably impossible - balancing act of trying to put on a show while maintaining a holding pattern as Sony and Microsoft's next-generation consoles wait on the horizon, Nintendo delivered a breathless presentation that played to all of its strengths. Oh, and it delivered news of a Breath of the Wild sequel, too, which helped.

  26. Bleeding Edge is maybe a misnomer, but Ninja Theory is rightfully bullish

Feature | Bleeding Edge is maybe a misnomer, but Ninja Theory is rightfully bullish

Why multiplayer? "Because I'm the creative director and I like it."

Honestly, I went into my hands-on with Bleeding Edge thinking there was more than a little whiff of Lawbreakers about it - and you can't really blame me. Here we have a well-known developer going all class-based-multiplayer-action-team-based et cetera et cetera. Especially, too, as it's been so long since Overwatch first carved out that little corner of the market, and so clear that most of the plucky, edgy-haircutted challengers that tried to go toe-to-toe - Lawbreakers yes, plus Battleborn, Drawn to Death, Paragon and the rest - have largely fallen by the wayside.
