Feature | What is the essence of Fallout, and does the TV show live up to it?
Songs of innocence and experience.
As the dust settles on Fallout's first TV season, which appears to have been as universally beloved as any piece of media can be in today's world, the line that sticks with me most radiates from early in the show. As Ella Purnell's Vault Dweller Lucy sleeps beside her Scout badge-perfect campfire, she awakes to find Michael Emerson's fugitive scientist sitting nearby. All-too familiar with the perils of the Wasteland, Emerson's character urges her to return to the Vault from whence she came. This goes down with Lucy about as well as two litres of irradiated water, so instead the scientist posits a question. "Will you still want the same things, when you become a different animal altogether?"

Could World of Warcraft on console finally be happening?
"I will say nothing's impossible."
In the autumn of last year, Holly Longdale, the executive producer and vice president of World of Warcraft, made headlines by saying the team talks about putting WoW on console "all the time". It's a question the company has been asked repeatedly over the game's near 20-year lifetime, and it's an answer we've heard before, but it gained new momentum in light of Microsoft's recently completed acquisition of Activision Blizzard. When better to bring the game to Xbox than now?

Feature | Revisiting the first video game websites from the dark ages
"It's a bit of a lost art..."
In 1997, Diablo was everything to me; I thought about it at school, at family dinners, netball practice, recess. Even when I was allowed to play it on my dad's Gateway 2000, I wanted more. And the only place to get more Diablo, back then, was on the Diablo website. Yes, there were fan sites packed with cheats and the same gifs - but what I wanted was a pure unadulterated hit from the official webpage, its message boards filled with poetry and oddly civil flame wars and passive-aggressive posts titled "SUGGESTIONS for Blizzard to Read." There was no YouTube or Discord or Twitch, and certainly no influencer/streaming ecosystem. Sure, there was IRC and usenet and bulletin boards, which formed the backbone of social networks back then - and were the foundation for more accessible World Wide Web experiences that followed. But in the late 90s, there was something truly special going on for fans who wanted a direct connection to their games: the short-lived but holy institution of the official forum-based website.

Wizards of the Coast "now talking to lots of partners" about next Baldur's Gate
"We certainly hope it's not another 25 years."
Larian Studios didn't so much smash last year's Baldur's Gate 3 out of the park as launch it straight into orbit, collecting countless Game of the Year awards and even a few BAFTAs along the way. But while the studio has made it clear it has no interest in returning for a Baldur's Gate 4, Dungeons and Dragons owner Wizard of the Coast is definitely onboard for more, and is currently "talking to lots of partners" about the future of the series.

Fallout TV show holding "iconic" stuff back for Season 2, including deathclaws
To "be able to do it properly".
Amazon's Fallout TV show has - a few minor controversies aside - been a hit with fans since arriving last week; but while it's covered plenty of the video games' post-apocalyptic basics across its eight episodes - from Pip-Boys and Power Armour to Vaults and Vault-Tec - not everything's made the cut. And its creators have now explained they deliberately held some "iconic" stuff back, including deathclaws, to better do them justice in a potential Season 2.

Digital Foundry | PC image quality enhanced: the new DLSS and XeSS tested
Machine learning-based upscaling has evolved.
Machine learning-based image reconstruction has evolved into a genuinely game-changing technology - and what sets this apart from other PC features is that users can effectively mod improved versions of Nvidia DLSS and Intel XeSS into games with existing support, simply by swapping a .DLL file in the install directories. With that in mind, we wanted to use this unofficial modding technique to give a preview of sorts for the latest versions of DLSS and XeSS, to see what has changed.
