  4. What should a World War look like?

Feature | What should a World War look like?

    Copying reality, making history.

Video games have given us countless images of the past, some literal-minded, some more playful, from Total War's continent-sized thought experiments to the hinterland between myth, game design and archaeological record that is Assassin's Creed Odyssey. Among 2018's offerings are two that, to my mind, deserve special attention for the stark yet deceptive contrast they form: DigixArt and Aardman's melancholy Great War tale 11-11: Memories Retold, and DICE's characteristically seismic World War 2 shooter Battlefield 5.

  5. Battlefield 5 reverses TTK change that turned players into bullet sponges

We've had a couple of major u-turns in the last few weeks: first it was Epic's faux-pas with a fancy (but very overpowered) sword, and now it's all about Battlefield 5, as DICE has reversed its unpopular TTK (Time to Kill) balance change introduced to the game last week.

  6. Fresh Prince's Carlton sues Fortnite for copying his legendary dance

Arguably the most famous dance ever created in the history of the world - except from the moonwalk maybe - is Carlton's finger-snapping, forearm-whirling, hip-swinging dance from TV show The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. You all know it, just like you all know the words to Will Smith's rap-troduction.

  8. After all these years, World of Warcraft adds a potion to understand your enemy with

For as long as World of Warcraft has been alive, Horde and Alliance haven't been able to understand each other (with a few exceptions). Your game client would garble what players of the opposing faction said, thereby reinforcing a sense of belonging while sprinkling on a bit of exotic mystique.

  9. Someone is using My PS4 Life videos to work out player counts for loads of games

If you've been anywhere near social media over the last few days, you're likely to have seen PlayStation users freaking out over the obscene number of hours they've ploughed into Destiny (or is that just my colleagues?). The reason for this is Sony has allowed players to create personalised videos showing gaming highlights from the past five years - like the Facebook ones your Mum tags you in, minus the embarrassing photos.

Eurogamer readers' top 50 games of 2018 voting

Have your say on the year's greatest games.

You! Hello! You! It has been almost 365 days since January the 1st - 52 weeks! 12 months! - which means we're close to the point where we can say that 2018 was a year that was. Isn't that a thing? It has also been a year in which some video games were released, between the dates of January 1st 2018 and December 31st 2018, and as is the somewhat bewildering tradition amongst people we will now spend the next few weeks bickering about which of those video games were the best video games. It's a time to belittle those with opinions that differ from your own, to express dismay and bitterness at those who don't appreciate the merits of whatever brand of electronic entertainment box you have under your television and to get super salty in comments threads and forums across the internet. Rejoice!

  20. DF Retro: the forgotten Nintendo tech that makes GameCube HDMI possible

Digital Foundry | DF Retro: the forgotten Nintendo tech that makes GameCube HDMI possible

Nintendo's vintage 2001 console has never looked better.

Nintendo's GameCube is a fascinating design - and an under-appreciated masterpiece of console technology. First released in Japan in September 2001, it offered a vast leap in 3D power compared to its predecessor - the Nintendo 64 - while at the same time delivering the whole package in a tiny form-factor. But there are hints that Nintendo had further plans for its machine, ideas built into the design that were never fully utilised - until now. A series of HDMI adapters for the machine are now available, delivering crystal-clear 480p, derived from a lossless digital signal that was mysteriously built into the GameCube hardware.
