Digital Foundry | Are mechanical keyboards really good for gaming?
How 'mechs' went from niche to mainstream - and which ones are worth buying.
When it comes to PC gaming peripherals, stats and specs drive purchases. Gaming monitors became popular because they offered lower latency or higher refresh rates, while gaming mice boasted higher sensitivities and improved tracking accuracy. Yet this quantitative trend doesn't seem to apply to one peripheral in particular: mechanical keyboards. No single stat separates mechs from their non-mechanical counterparts, yet mechanical keyboards are routinely recommended over alternatives that cost a fraction of the price. Why is this the case? Are there genuine gaming advantages?

Feature | Tetris Effect already looks like a classic
Luminous.
Tetsuya Mizugichi and some of the staff of Enhance Games brought Tetris Effect to our office last week. Martin and I had a go on it - actually, Martin had already been able to play it in Japan, so he watched - and we wrote up our thoughts afterwards. In short, Enhance has a serious banger on its hands. I'm already very excited about this week's demo.

Hopefully this time it won't tank.
We've been waiting a little while for an explanation of how Tides of War - Battlefield 5's new live services system to replace the premium pass - will actually work. The developer has been pretty cagey on the subject, which is unsurprising in the wake of the backlash over Star Wars Battlefront 2's loot boxes - a mistake DICE said it "can't afford to make" in future.

Review | Football Manager 2019 review - rare blip in form for a sim with permanent class
Calm: Tell the lads you're disappointed.
Sometimes - and I promise it's never for very long - I wonder why I like Football Manager. It's tempting to draw the easy comparison with football itself, to liken the highs and the lows to the perpetual undulations of your side's form out here in reality. But that's not it. Catch me at a moment of managerial despair and it'll rarely be after a loss, as much as those 40-shot, 80-per-cent-possession slumps at home can hurt. No, if I'm wondering why I do it to myself and what it's all for, it'll be because I've encountered a puzzle I cannot solve.

One of the most anticipated games of the year, Red Dead Redemption 2 launched last Friday - and it made quite the impact. Digital Foundry | Soulcalibur 6 analysis: every version tested
Image quality and effects work split the pack.
Marking the series' 20th anniversary, a tale of souls and swords is retold once more in Soulcalibur 6 - a sequel that positions itself as something of a successor to the Dreamcast classic, in reprising its cast. It's a direct link that only highlights just how far we've come in the interim. We have two decades worth of move-set changes, added mechanics and technical upgrades to factor in, where Bandai Namco's efforts today are based on an entirely different engine. With the move to Unreal Engine 4, as with Tekken 7, it gives the team scope to push for more effects and shaders than we'd thought possible back in 1998. At launch, it also gives it the means to scale across more platforms than any entry before it. In doing so, there's a huge gulf in image quality between the four current-gen machines.
