Content Warning is the new Lethal Company - or it is today at least. Ascendant Studios' Immortals of Aveum is currently enjoying a new lease of life as a 'free' game on PlayStation Plus - and two major upgrades are coming soon. The first - patch 1.0.6.3 - adds support for high dynamic range and should be rolling out to all console versions of the game today. God, I adore flatscreen to VR mods. Honestly, they're just so much more exciting to me than the current crop of official VR releases. A large portion of anticipated titles have been fairly underwhelming to say the least, but thankfully there's absolutely nothing like the feeling of revisiting an all-time classic in VR to make you fall in love with the medium once again.

    "It's been a strange life."

I'm sitting opposite Saboteur's coder, Clive Townsend, at a retro gaming show in the Midlands. Two pints separate us: beer for me, cider for him - ever the West Country boy - and Townsend is affable, smiling and jovial. "20 years ago, I could have reached across this table and rendered you unconscious in two seconds," he grins. I laugh nervously while swigging a mouthful of Spanish lager. "But I've not trained for a long time. These days, I'd more likely breakdance a bit after a few drinks - but it usually ends in tears."

  25. hi-fi rush key art

Digital Foundry | Hi-Fi Rush on PS5 and the Xbox multi-platform story so far

Great games get a wider audience - but bugs and Xbox tech issues need closer attention.

Hi-Fi Rush recently arrived on PlayStation 5 and as contentious as the idea of Xbox going 'multi-plat' in any way may be, the strategy so far is sound. Lower profile titles that aren't exactly triple-A juggernauts gain a new lease of life on competing console hardware. Giving titles like Hi-Fi Rush more of a chance to find a bigger audience can only be a good thing for the games themselves, and equally, could even help evangelise the Xbox platform and what it offers to a wider audience. However, Microsoft needs to tread carefully for obvious reasons - and a combination of bugs, tech polish issues and minor gaffes are concerning. In some cases, the PS5 versions receive features ahead of Xbox Series X and in the case of Hi-Fi Rush, there's a minor graphical upgrade of sorts on the Sony machine.

  29. A publicity screen for DirectDrive, with a forties-style singer singing into an old microphone, depicted in a cartoon art style.

Feature | Meet the 57-year-old who just released his first video game

"If I can do this, you guys can do this, anybody could do this."

At the age of 57, Chris Mandra has just released his first video game. This is something I find truly remarkable. For all the modern talk about portfolio careers and the death of a job-for-life, the idea of embarking on a completely new career in your sixth decade on Earth seems astonishing. At the age of 44, I sometimes daydream about starting out again, venturing into the unknown, maybe writing a travel book or doing that master's degree I never got round to. But it doesn't happen. There are too many forces holding me back, too much inertia from mortgages and children and the idea of having to learn everything again from scratch. What Mandra has done is nothing short of extraordinary.
