Feature | Meet the 57-year-old who just released his first video game

"If I can do this, you guys can do this, anybody could do this."

At the age of 57, Chris Mandra has just released his first video game. This is something I find truly remarkable. For all the modern talk about portfolio careers and the death of a job-for-life, the idea of embarking on a completely new career in your sixth decade on Earth seems astonishing. At the age of 44, I sometimes daydream about starting out again, venturing into the unknown, maybe writing a travel book or doing that master's degree I never got round to. But it doesn't happen. There are too many forces holding me back, too much inertia from mortgages and children and the idea of having to learn everything again from scratch. What Mandra has done is nothing short of extraordinary.

  3. Dell Alienware AW3225QF review: the best 32-inch QD-OLED for UK buyers

Digital Foundry | Dell Alienware AW3225QF review: the best 32-inch QD-OLED for UK buyers

This 4K 240Hz screen has impressive Dolby Vision HDR too.

Earlier this month I reviewed the Asus ROG Swift PG32UCDM, a 32-inch QD-OLED gaming monitor that combines a 4K resolution with 240Hz refresh rate, impressive HDR and fewer downsides than your typical OLED panel - albeit at an eye-watering £1350 asking price. I noted that while the Asus monitor was a technical tour de force and the best gaming monitor I'd ever tested, it's not necessarily the best value 32-inch QD-OLED. For that, UK buyers ought to be looking at the subject of this review: Dell's £940 Alienware AW3225QF, which uses the exact same QD-OLED panel and therefore ought to offer nigh-identical performance - for £410 less.

  4. A witch stands in front of a glowing portal conjured from standing stones in Timemelters.

This is the second time I've written this week's Game of the Week. The game has remained the same, though. That's the first part of the trick. Our game this week is, of course, Timemelters, by Autoexec. It's the spiritual sequel to one of my all time favourites, Sang-Froid: Tales of Werewolves.

Interview | Niantic: Pokémon Go healthy and growing as it approaches its next decade

"Go Tour was by many metrics our most successful week ever."

How much does someone who built the foundations of Pokémon Go still play the game, eight years on? It's the first question I ask Ed Wu, senior vice president of Pokémon Go, as we set off on a walk together around a leafy London park - our phones in hand, Pokémon Go open. "I spend as much of my time beating up the game as possible," he laughs. This is often using work-in-progress beta builds, he admits, to ensure upcoming features are bug-tested. But he still plays his "official" main account when he can - and it's clearly a source of pride that his was the first ever user account - or one of the first, he can't quite recall - registered on Pokémon Go's live server back at launch in the summer of 2016.

The best PC settings look a lot like Guerrilla's choices for PlayStation 5.

Now that Horizon Forbidden West is out on PC and we have had a good deal of time with the final shipping game, we can tie up some loose ends that were left hanging after last week's first look. What do optimised settings look like? What about Steam Deck? And are any lingering issues that should be addressed in future updates?

  18. Close up of Val, the golden haired anime protagonist of Visions of Mana, in gold armour

I have quite distinct memories of SNES classic Secret of Mana, despite not playing it too much. It's the visuals that stick in my mind: the bright greens of its forest environments, the electric yellows and pinks of its cute plant and bug enemies, and of course the colossal tree and its tangled roots seen in the game's iconic box artwork.

It's not often we get to hear a senior developer of a Super Mario Bros. game philosophise about game design. At gamescom last year, Takashi Tezuka, executive officer at Nintendo and producer on Super Mario Bros. Wonder, and Shiro Mouri, the game's director, gave us a glimpse, as they spoke with Eurogamer about their intentions for Super Mario Bros. Wonder.
