Recommended | Yakuza 0 review
Dragon age: origins.
Yakuza and the 1980s: it always looked an ideal fit, and so it proves. The series that never does anything by halves enters the decade of excess in a pulverising bombardment of bone-shuddering violence, overwrought melodrama, sentimentality and silliness, where just about everything is dialled up to 11. The bonkers and frequently brilliant result is the best Yakuza to date and one of the finest Sega games in years.

Feature | Dirt 4 is more evidence that Codemasters is back on track
Stage fright.
The release of Dirt Rally in 2015 felt like a pivotal moment for Codemasters. Having meandered in previous years away from its more grounded racing roots in its quest for the mainstream, this full-blooded, teeth-baring sim wasn't simply a return to the old ways; it was a total reinvention of the studio's philosophy. Here was a driving game that spat gravel in the face of anyone who dared come near it without working knowledge of load transfer and trail-braking, and it was all the better for it. The only question was, where could Codemasters go from there? What would happen when Dirt eventually went back to catering for the masses?

Feature | Punching Nazis
How do you fight an ideology?
I've been calculating the number of video game Nazis I've killed. I never played the original Wolfenstein, but I've done my time in various Commandos and Medal of Duty and Call of Honors. I spent twenty hours in Saboteur making things next to Nazis explode, and that was a pretty efficient ratio of time spent to Nazis killed. So I think it's probably between three and four thousand. In terms of imaginary body count, I've probably pretend-killed as many Nazis as I have Zerg.

Digital Foundry | Intel Kaby Lake: Core i3 7350K review
Is an overclockable dual-core CPU faster for games than an i5 quad?
We've been waiting for one of these for a long time. We know that Intel's Core i3 technology is good for gaming - up until recently, the Haswell-based Core i3 4130 has been at the heart of our budget PC build - but what if we could overclock it? Could a dual-core i3 operating within striking distance of 5.0GHz work as good, or indeed better, than a locked Core i5 quad-core processor? With the release of the Core i3 7350K, we can finally find out.

Watch: The very worst moments of Resident Evil 7
Marguerite your teeth and bear it.
And so it was that another Saturday rolled around. I may do a little long-overdue DIY on my bathroom, or (as is more likely) play several rounds of Overwatch in my PJs in a bid to nab that delightful new D.Va skin. How will you spend yours? I imagine at least some of you will be getting properly stuck into Resident Evil 7 now that it has finally launched. If you've finished it, did you enjoy it? I thought, overall, it was a fantastic return to form, a game that managed to be current and classically Resident Evil at the same time. And, crucially, creepy to boot. If you have indeed finished it, by the by, you might be interested in checking out the video below, in which I take you on a blood-soaked jaunt through the Baker household and the queasiest moments that I experienced within.

Video | Watch: Chris plays FTL for the first time, aids intergalactic slave trade
It's this week's Late to the Party.
To anybody who even remotely familiar with the things Chris Bratt likes, it will no doubt shock you to learn that he had never played FTL until this week's episode of Late to the Party. FTL is a game that feels like I was made specifically for him. It's a game as complimentary to his being as scarves are to his general aesthetic nine months of the year.

Feature | The voice behind The Witcher
How a Bournemouth lecturer became Geralt of Rivia.
It's the middle of December, 10 days away from Christmas. I'm on a train chugging along the south coast of England, across chilly countryside under a darkening grey sky. It's almost idyllic but mostly bleak, and so very ordinary - I've watched industrial estates and small villages like these roll by a hundred times before. This isn't where you'd normally go looking for a superstar.

Digital Foundry | Face-Off: Resident Evil 7
1080p60 locked with VR support - PlayStation offers the complete package.
Resident Evil 7 is the biggest shake-up the series has seen since the switch to an action-based focus in RE4. With a new first-person perspective and gameplay elements reminiscent of Konami's cancelled PT, this new horror title delivers a fresh take on Resident Evil that also manages to bring the series back to its core survival horror roots. From a technical perspective, a 60fps update offers up a level of smoothness usually reserved for remasters, rather than the latest current-gen instalments. The change in direction isn't just used to facilitate a return to survival horror gameplay either: it's also a direct result of the game supporting PlayStation VR, where the first-person action and 60Hz refresh makes an immersive low latency VR experience possible.
