Feature | Final Fantasy 15's new update is dumb, shallow and kind of brilliant
Kupo chicken.
For all its pomp and grandeur, Final Fantasy is so often at its best when it's being a little bit dumb. And it doesn't really get much dumber than the Moogle Chocobo carnival that's just launched as a free update to Final Fantasy 15. A standalone of sorts set in Altissia, the carnival repurposes the Venetian city as a colourful parade of mini-games that offer enough diversions to while away an hour or two.

Digital Foundry | Life of Black Tiger is the worst PS4 game we've ever played
Not for the Players.
2017 is just getting started and not only do we have a strong candidate for the worst game of the year, but Life of Black Tiger may well be the most awful title we've ever played on PlayStation 4. Indeed, it may well be the worst game of the console generation so far - it really is stupendously bad, to the point where APB Reloaded on Xbox One is an immeasurably more enjoyable experience.

Video | Watch: Johnny cooks Kirby's super spicy curry
Supper Smash Bros.
Stop to think about it long enough, and it's hard to avoid reaching the conclusion that Kirby is an eldritch nightmare the likes of which H.P Lovecraft would have been proud. Possessed as he is of a voracious appetite and a seemingly endless maw, he inhales all those who stand in the way and takes their very essence for his own. He's the quintessential soul eater.

Feature | When games get collectibles right
Ping when you're winning.
I can't remember the point at which I received the new crystal-tracking device in Grow Up, but I can remember what I thought when I did. I thought: Well, I won't be using that. Tracking down the glowing chunks of crystal scattered around the landscape had been one of the great joys of Grow Home, a game which is hardly short on greatness or joy in the first place. You'd rove about the compact 3D playground, and you'd see something glinting. You'd move in close and a tingling sound would rise up over the soundtrack. There it is! Swooping in, or clambering up over rocks to reach the glowing trinket, you'd then have to grab it and yank it out of the earth. It was a bit like pulling a tooth, except it felt brilliant. The crystals unlocked stuff as you collected them, but that wasn't the point. The point was that there were a certain number of them and you were going to find them all!

Watch: We played Resident Evil 7 in real life
Well that was unpleasant.
I've completed Resident Evil 7 and, I have to say, I really enjoyed it. However, I stayed as far away as I could from the game's widely touted VR mode because honestly, nope to every part of that. For some bizarre reason though, I said yes to undertaking the Resident Evil 7 Experience, a real-life escape-the-room in London that sets you against the twisted Baker family as you attempt to rescue the camera crew featured in one of the game's playable VHS found footage segments. It was all rather stressful, but thankfully I had Luke from our lovely sister channel Outside Xtra to keep me company. I imagine if we'd sent Ian or Bratt they'd have gotten as far as the kitchen before curling themselves into a ball in the cupboard.
