  1. Death Star DLC introduces the Star Wars: Battlefront you were looking for (sort of)

Poor DICE. One of the biggest criticisms thrown the way of its Star Wars-themed multiplayer shooter, and one of the biggest hurdles it's faced since its announcement, is that it didn't feel very much like Battlefront at all. Gone was the easy transition from on-foot combat to aerial dogfights, and every leaked piece of footage from Free Radical's Battlefront 3 only serves to illustrate how far DICE's take had fallen from the tree.

  2. Seraph, the balletic shooter with no aiming, leaves Early Access

Seraph is a bit of a treat, a hectic 2D shooter about zipping around procedural environments while blasting everything that moves. How hectic is it? Sufficiently hectic for the game to handle the small business of aiming, so that you can concentrate on everything else.

    Review | The Bunker review

    Rad?

If you are of a certain age, you may have had dreams like this: dreams in which the men in the masks come, in which the world is poisoned and you're dragged away to some hole in the ground to escape from the toxic sky. It was always the men in the masks that really stuck with me: a fear of the faceless agents who would usher in the radioactive apocalypse. A fear sharpened, perhaps, by that brilliant moment in ET - itself a film not untouched by the Cold War - in which the mother tries to protect her children while the astronauts advance through her house. Not towards her: around her. A nightmare made worse through its own peculiar focal point.

  12. Gears of War 4's campaign feels like an Epic revival

Feature | Gears of War 4's campaign feels like an Epic revival

Hands on with campaign and multiplayer.

The views may be pleasantly apocalyptic, and the second act may feature a motorbike duel with a robot B52, but it's the little things that really sell me on Gears of War 4 - the surprisingly delicate way it both harkens back to and departs from Epic's original cover-shooters. The fact that Swarm footsoldiers rush you when they're close to death, for example, where their Locust predecessors would often dig in till the bitter end. The presence of branching path sections that ask teams of two to support one another across a gulf, a classic Gears device enlivened by the addition of flying enemies and eccentric new flavours of sniper rifle.

    The dog's Busquets.

What is it about football games? While fans of other genres can expect not just consistent output but steady improvement from their favourite series, those of us to whom pressing X means pass rather than jump have long known it's best to approach our major releases with trepidation. One year the game might feel too slow, the next too fast. One year it's too easy to score, another too hard. In what other iterative releases are the core mechanics in such a state of constant flux? (I have a theory about the most talented developers not being interested in sports - but we'll save that for another time.)

  23. FIFA 17: How the Frostbite engine improves visuals

Digital Foundry | FIFA 17: How the Frostbite engine improves visuals

Digital Foundry plays FIFA 16 and 17 simultaneously - with the same controller.

FIFA 17 moves to the Frostbite engine this year, the same tech as seen in Battlefield One and the upcoming Mass Effect. It's a departure from the Ignite engine used between FIFA 14 and 16 - introduced to show off the capabilities of PlayStation 4 and Xbox One - and allows for a big improvement in the series' lighting and atmospheric effects. We pit the two engines against each other here to see exact extent of the change, and if this is the series visual overhaul we've been waiting for.

  24. Star Citizen's first-person shooting changes coming along nicely

Much is made of the spaceships in Star Citizen, or of the planetary landings, but there's a fair chunk of the game that will play out on foot - shooting included. But currently the game has an odd quirk, or problem depending on how you look at it: head bobbing. The camera is attached the model's eyes and so bobs around an awful lot. But that's going to change.
