Review | Into the Dead review
A zombie auto-runner? Yep, sounds like the end of days.
Admittedly, the concept isn't all that promising. A zombie-themed auto-runner is an unholy union of two of the most tired trends in games right now, and that's before you consider the small matter of micro-transactions. Happily, it is a small matter thanks to sensible monetisation, while the game itself turns out to be a surprisingly smart little time-waster, suggesting someone at Pik Pok one day wondered how Left 4 Dead might play with the sprint button stuck down.

Bad moon rising: Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2 preview
Gabriel: First Blood.
When the much beloved Castlevania legacy was handed off to Spanish developer MercurySteam (Clive Barker's Jericho), with Kojima productions supervising, there was a lot of backlash. Many complained about it eschewing the open-ended exploration that had become a series mainstay since 1997's Symphony of the Night and accused it of being a God of War clone. Others, like myself, remembered the series from its earlier, linear days and appreciated it for what it was. It may have owed more to Kratos than Alucard, but for my money, it was better than Sony Santa Monica's flagship mythological hack-and-slash.

Review | rRootage Online review
Hot ship!
rRootage Online is a version of the original PC rRootage, one of the finest productions from ABA Studios, which has one employee: the brilliant Kenta Cho. Cho's been making games for well over a decade now, mostly shoot-'em-ups, and gives everything he makes away for free; it's an attitude that he says comes from making the games he wants to play and having no interest in making money from them. In every respect he's a remarkable developer.

Video | Watch us play Dark from 4.30pm BST
We play it so you don't have to.
Call me naive, but I was quite looking forward to Dark. In the run-up to its release the developers - and people who had seen it - were making all the right noises, saying how this was a game that's taking the art of bloodsucking to the shadows. It helped that there were links being made to Vampire: The Masquerade, but any such links have seemingly been severed by sloppy execution and broken stealth, as Dan discovered in his review. Oh well - if you're a fan of Vampire: The Masquerade, we've got a little something for you tomorrow afternoon that should help ease the pain.

Review | Dungeons & Dragons: Chronicles of Mystara review
How I met your mother of dragons.
Back when arcades were filled with bat-top sticks, adjustable racing seats and plastic machine-guns that you could pivot in place like an oversized joystick, making that one credit last as long as humanly possible was the ultimate goal. Conversely, arcade game manufacturers wanted your game to expire in a timely manner. Not so quick that you immediately lost interest and set off in search of something less punishing, but not so long that you could see the credits roll for the price of a sandwich. It was a balancing act, one that required subtlety, and nowhere were the scales more apparent than with the classic scrolling beat-'em-up.
