Digital Foundry | Analysis: BioShock PS3 1.10 Released
BioShock on PlayStation3 is a classic example of a great game compromised by a disappointing conversion. It’s like a textbook rendition of what’s typically wrong with the poorer ports onto the Sony platform: lower, wildly fluctuating frame rate, lower resolution, and zero appreciable bonus content (that you don’t have to pay for) despite a wait of 12 months for the port. Plus a horrible blur on top of all that. The game has just been patched to remove its occasional lower resolution textures, its white bar that surrounds cut-scenes and numerous other small glitches. Code for the inclusion of the new Challenge Rooms DLC (the content that PS3 owners really should’ve got for free, in the box) is also there.

Digital Foundry | Bungie Responds to Halo 3 NXE HDD Load Time Lag
Last week, I spent a few days measuring performance of the New Xbox Experience install to hard disk feature. Eurogamer editor Tom Bramwell suggested a list of top 360 games we should put to the test. Equipment used? My NTSC Xbox 360 Elite (used alongside my debug station for all the EG features) combined with the 20GB HDD from a PAL launch machine. The full feature is here.

Digital Foundry | Grail Quest: Crysis/Max Settings/1080p60
The gauntlet has been thrown down. According to our contact at nVidia, the new GTX295 dual GPU graphics card is the most powerful piece of consumer-level rendering hardware in the world, and the first to play Crysis at Very High settings at 1080p60. In DirectX 9, any way. You’ll need two of these £400 graphics cards to get similar performance in DX10. So the theory goes any way.

Digital Foundry | Welcome to Digital Foundry
It’s been a long time coming, but finally the Digital Foundry tech blog has been humanely re-homed and is ready to resume full service. For those new to the site, our aims are remarkably straightforward – to go beyond the gameplay, telling you how games work, what makes them tick, and of course, crucially, what levels of performance you can expect from them.

Digital Foundry | WipEout HD's 1080p Sleight of Hand
Namco's Ridge Racer 7 has been the standard bearer for true 1920×1080p on PlayStation 3 since the system launched, and to this day nothing gets close to what this game is achieving at full raster 1080p. Sure, GT5 has a tangibly superior look overall but its mixture of 1280×1080 (in-game) and 1440×1080 (replay) resolutions precludes it from the discussion.

Review | UFC 2009: Undisputed
A challenger appears.
Why isn't the UFC as popular as boxing? Are the MMA (mixed martial arts) fighters of the UFC not superior in overall combat, demonstrating that fighters of a single discipline invariably have inherent weaknesses when their respective rulebooks are thrown out of the window? Well, the UFC certainly fields some of the world's most talented combatants, but it doesn't always deliver the most entertaining fights. For every bloody slugfest - where two stand-up fighters beat each other senseless for three rounds - we get a first-round submission finish, where a dominant ground fighter trips up his opponent before forcing him to submit with some manner of ankle or arm lock. An impressive demonstration of hand-to-hand combat, yes, but not as entertaining as seeing someone knocked out with a tornado kick to the face.

Review | Bionic Commando
Where the wild thing's arm.
What with videogame worlds getting bigger and bigger, it's no surprise that we get correspondingly excited whenever someone comes up with a new way to lob ourselves across them - whether it's jumping between rooftops in Crackdown, zooming along Halo in a Banshee, or swinging around the crumbling remains of Ascension City like Tarzan meets Robocop in Bionic Commando. If we're going to commute between the fun, better to do it in style.

Review | Damnation
The clue's in the name.
Contrary to popular opinion, we critics are not a pinch-faced brood of grinchy old killjoys, no longer able to recognise the simple notion of "fun" as we hungrily plot to eviscerate the next hapless game that crosses our path. Quite the opposite. When you spend much of your working life playing games, you can't help but look for the best in everything, trying to find that glimmer of worth to justify the investment of time and money each game demands of our shared audience.
