Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning
Please, Warhammer, don't hurt 'em.
Looked at from one angle, Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning is a game with everything going for it. It has a licence perfectly suited to a massively multiplayer RPG with the kind of classical high fantasy setting that has been the basis of virtually every successful MMO to date, from Ultima to Lord of the Rings. It has an experienced developer in the form of Mythic, creators of Dark Age of Camelot, and the bottomless resources of Mythic's new owners EA (although GOA will publish and operate the game in Europe). It has another few months in development to ensure it's as good as it can be. It has a wide-open path to the mainstream, conveniently bulldozed by genre phenomenon World of Warcraft. It has simple, familiar basics backed up by a truckload of big and rather brilliant ideas.

Review | Command & Conquer 3: Kane's Wrath
The Scrin-er takes it all.
By now, the wives of the assorted Command and Conquer head honchos have got to be getting a little suspicious. "So, who have you hired for that new job in the office?" they'll ask. "Oh, no-one special. Just the best candidate," says the commander. "Her references were impeccable." An eyebow twitches. He glances out the window. "Oooh, isn't the Tiberium lovely at this time of year." "Is she attractive?" "Well... if you like that kind of thing. Could do with a few square meals, of course." "She better not be another sex symbol, Mr Commander!" "Is that the time? I need to get to bed." "I'm going to Tank Rush all over your Tesla Coils, mister."

Review | Viking: Battle For Asgard
Helish.
Opening up gaming to the masses is one hell of a double-edged sword. Sure, make games more approachable, with intuitive controls and a steady learning curve. By all means introduce rechargeable health systems and automatically save progress as you go along. Hell, respawn the player into the action if it's feasible in the context of the storyline. Some of our favourite games of recent times have managed all of the above without making us cry. But Viking? It makes us want to swing sharp implements of death around with scant regard.

Review | Ratchet & Clank: Size Matters
But it's what you do with it that counts, right?
Ratchet & Clank: a Western platformer so good that even the Japanese loved it - and for good reason. While the 16-bit old school have continually pined for Sonic or Mario to come up with the platforming goods, Sony has basically sewn up the genre over the past six years, with four superb Ratchet games right at the centre of this unexpected world domination, with Sly Raccoon and Jak & Daxter ramming the point home in some style.

Review | The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess
Deserves a spotlight.
Like many desirable things in life, it's not the size, it's what you do with it that counts. After so many years in development, we all expected the new Zelda to be an absolute monster of a game. Sure enough, Nintendo proudly proclaims on the back of the box that Twilight Princess is "the biggest Zelda adventure of all time".

Review | Metroid Prime
Hallelujah! The Cube is saved!
March snuck up on us like a second Christmas this year, with a barrage of new and exciting games across all formats. We must confess though that much of our excitement was centred on Retro Studios GameCube debut. Having spent several months labouring over a US version, we were excited to finally get our hands on the closely guarded PAL release this week.

Review | Sega Sports Day, with Barry Wannaker and Banal Handsome
Sega Sports Day - with your hosts Barry Wannaker and expert wheezebag Banal Handsome!
Barry: Hello, good evening, and welcome to the inaugural Eurogamer Sports Day in conjunction with Sega; and haven't we got an action-packed evening's entertainment lined up for the viewers at home? It's not all Association Football, Rugger and Cricket around these parts, you know. Sometimes we like to slip on a baseball cap, quite literally the wrong way around, hop into a Tommy Hilfiger jumper and cruise to the "US of Stateside", and see what our American cousins are whooping and hollering to in their "World" of "Sport". This week, we knocked on the doors of Sega Enterprises, and with a cheery, cheeky, but professional grin, asked these "Sonic Boom Boys" to wow us with their latest sporting trio; NHL, NFL and NBA - or to us clueless limeys, Ice Hockey, American Football, and Basketball, eh Banal?

Review | Space Giraffe
Splodgenessabounds.
Two reviews? What's the point of that? Well, Space Giraffe is not a normal game, y'see, and is probably the most hotly debated game this year, or any other year. Some people think it's an unfathomable load of tosh, others seem to think it's really rather splendid. So rather than provide you with one viewpoint, we looked at two contrasting opinions of Jeff Minter's Xbox Live Arcade shooter. We're good to you like that.

Review | Killer 7
Kristan and Tom share the same page, if not the same brain.

Review | The House of the Dead 2&3 Return
I don't wanna die!
You can either berate SEGA for blatantly cashing in on its tired old light-gun back catalogue, or continue to celebrate the fact that the Wii is the new spiritual home for all these old classics, with a control system that lends itself perfectly to the genre. It's little wonder we're currently experiencing a flood of old and new point-and-shoot blasters. Recently, SEGA got the ball rolling by belatedly treating us to a port of 2004 arcade title Ghost Squad, so it's only logical to service this peculiar niche by re-issuing something more renowned and familiar - in this case House of the Dead 2 and 3 in the same package. If you care enough about the genre, the chances are you'll already own one or the other (probably both), and will simply relish the chance to play them again using the Wii controllers - either the Wii Zapper or the similarly adept Wii Remote.

Review | Land of the Dead
Not so much undead as short-lived
There is nothing quite like the marriage of your common-or-garden zombie and a sturdy crowbar. Once dead, a body starts decomposing just a few minutes after breathing its last breath – so the zombies of Land of the Dead, who've been reanimated for long enough to take over the world, are understandably pretty ripe. Laying into them with a crowbar is like hitting over-ripe fruit with, well, a crowbar.

Review | Enemy Territory: Quake Wars
These are hostile waters.
It's a good week for those who enjoy taking care of Alien Scum. Unless you've been living under an especially soundproof rock, you can't fail to have noticed that the Master Chief has returned to Earth this week to splatter some Covenant types all over the ruins of East Africa - but it's not just Xbox 360 owners who will be finishing the fight this weekend.
