Review | Mashed
Micro Machines pulped.
It's a minor miracle we ever manage to write anything on Eurogamer when games like this show up. So face gurningly addictive are top down racing games, you're almost morally obliged to stay right where you are until bodily functions dictate otherwise (or your better half simply drags you away, in the case of this reviewer). Mashed isn't exactly doing anything new as such, but aside from its decidedly wonky camera still manages to press all the right buttons for most of the time you're playing it - whether single player or in full-on four-player party mode.

Review | Gradius V
Treasure's turn to revitalise the classic shooter series.
Somewhere in a darkened, dusty, slightly damp corner of Planet Earth there is a being capable of playing Gradius V the way it is meant to be played. No continues, no pussyfooting about on 'Very Easy' and certainly no more than three ships, thank you. If we ever meet that Gradius God, we'd like to shake his trembling, withered, twitch-gaming hands - that's if, indeed, this being has hands, and isn't simply using advanced gaming Telekinesis to communicate with the PS2 via neural impulses. To the game's developer, Treasure, we say: do you lay awake at night trying to think of the most evil ways to put paid to gamers? Why not simply allow the game to consist of a series of gaming deaths from different angles, quickly followed by a Game Over screen? Oh you did?

Review | Psi-Ops: The Mindgate Conspiracy
It has control of our brains. Resistance... is... futile...
If we could engage in some active mind control, it would be to make people buy decent games. You know, stop them in their tracks when they line up to pick up another copy of Driv3r or Catwoman. Or, even better, influence the money men of gaming into making better games in the first place so that we never have to endure some of the ritual torture that regularly masquerades as entertainment. We were thinking of what we could do to Midway, but someone evidently got to its boardroom ahead of us. Until recently it had been stuck in a depressing post arcade-era rut, producing a slew of uninspiring updates to old hits, along with a few forgettable new IPs like Dr Muto and Haven.

Review | Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell
Can the PS2 handle the Xbox classic?
Despite its all consuming dominance, coaxing technologically impressive results out of the PlayStation 2 has eluded all but a handful of elite developers. With this in mind, it was hardly surprising that no one expected Ubi Soft to be able to port such a visually demanding title as Splinter Cell. With easily the most stunning lighting effects ever seen in a videogame, fantastic use of shadows, stunningly detailed texturing, and a long list of other impressive visual delights, even the most hardened Sony fanboys would have feared for the conversion; after all, the game wasn't even designed for the PS2.

Review | The Lord of the Rings Online: Shadows of Angmar
Pure Shire.
If you cast your mind back to last April, you might remember something curious about the launch of Lord of the Rings Online: how smooth it was. There were very few bugs, despite the usual array of gameplay complaints, and a straight 9/10 score from our resident hardman Rob. No launch had been so professional in the MMO world since World of Warcraft's. And, unlike its near-contemporary Auto Assault, LOTRO is still going; in fact the number of people playing has been rapidly increasing. So what's changed since then, and why is it drawing new gamers in?

Assassin's Creed: Director's Cut Edition
Altair of this pun eventually.
Just as before, we're not going to tell you anything. Well, we're going to talk about the game, obviously. We're going to talk about the slightly incongruous American killer running around the Middle East in an eagle garb severing jugulars. We're going to talk about the new PC-specific missions, and how it looks compared to the multi-million-selling console versions, and what kind of crackpot control scheme the console-to-PC converters have assembled this time.

Review | Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 3
Shoot yourself in the head.
Part of us sullenly rebels against powering on the PS2. Standard definition, without even the consolation prize of innovative controls? No online features, no Achievements, no downloadable demo or add-on content? So quickly have we become accustomed to the luxuries of next-gen that our trusty consoles of yesterday feel only a step away from banging rocks together.
