Review | Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter 2
War's nothing to get het up about.
Perhaps I'm just a bad leader. Even though I don't get my men killed that often and they diligently trot out "nice shooting, sir" when I make a headshot, I don't get the impression they're happy. Or even conscious, to be honest. They don't talk to each other, they don't joke, they don't complain about being told to walk backwards into a firezone. Occasionally, if left to his own devices for a while, one will pathetically inquire "sir?" in a voice that sounds like a slightly butchered C-3PO awaiting instruction. But that's it. It's creepy. That's why I've started tackling missions on my own, leaving my squad back near the insertion point to stare blank-eyed at the floor. I might well be in extreme danger as a result, but at least I no longer feel like I'm being followed around by three shop dummies wired up to dog brains.

Should make a killing.
There were lots of highlights at E3 last week - running into Rutger Hauer, firing a pump-action shotgun, talking to Peter Moore about his braces - but one of the greater disappointments was Ubisoft's Assassin's Creed demo at the Microsoft conference. Having grown up in the public eye as an archly mysterious, beautifully imagined medieval kill-'em-up with more than its fair share of good ideas, it saw high-flying assassin Altair bumble onto the big screen, bounce off a few NPCs, prance across a series of beams, stab and gurn and then fire up an accent not so much west of Jerusalem as west of Adam West.

Review | King Of Fighters: Maximum Impact 2
Minimum fun.
So Ignition and SNK have seen fit to release a pair of new King Of Fighters games on the same day. We're not sure what the logic behind this move was but we will say this - error. Presumably the idea was to satisfy both fans of more traditional 2D battling while simultaneously laying something on for those fully immersed in the deluded concept that polygons are synonymous with quality. With so many advances in the 3D fighting market since its creation, the extra dimension is far from the only difference between the two - games like Virtua Fighter simply cannot be compared to Street Fighter and its ilk because the two are excellent in their own very different fields. The mistake that Maximum Impact 2 makes is overlooking the now gaping divide between 2D and 3D beat-'em-ups and, for this folly, it pays a pretty steep price.

Review | PSP Roundup
Vegas, Puzzle World, Hot Brain, SBK-07 and Xiaolin Showdown.
Time was, people used to scoff that you couldn't do first-person shooters on a console. TimeSplitters and Halo disproved that notion, no matter what some musty old PC obsessives would have you believe, and so now we move to a new battlefield: you can't do first-person shooters on a handheld.
