Guy Wilday talks to us as we play SEGA Rally. A lot.
As with all such things, the key to making a good rally game is wedged in the door marked 'pub'. "You sit late in bars with drivers and co-drivers talking about how these things work," says SEGA Racing Studio boss Guy Wilday. Then you go home and do some programming. So what do rally drivers say? "It's all about tyres, and it's all about surfaces. That really is a key topic of conversation. The cars themselves are obviously very technically innovative, but the thing they focus on is the tyres and the surfaces - what tyres they need for a particular surface, how a car is going to behave on a particular surface, and how that surface is going to change."

Review | Overlord
Gangs of New Orcs.
I had to genocide the elves. I had no choice, you understand. Well, I had a choice, but that'd involve not killing the elves, so it wasn't really a choice at all. So, as the remaining elf-maids cried to the heavens, my giggling serfs dragged off an enormous pile of gold which I'd spend on an old fridge which leaks CFCs constantly or something.

Review | Big Brain Academy: Wii Degree
Wouldn't graduate with a third from a polytechnic.
Big Brain Academy: Wii Degree is a difficult sort of title for a video game reviewer to approach. Okay, sure, it has many of the trappings of a traditional video game; medals for playing well, a multiplayer mode, it comes in a box on a disc that you put into a console, that sort of thing. But as part of Nintendo's "Touch Generations" line-up, it's probably as uncomfortable with me using the term "game" to describe it as I am. The difference is, of course, is that Big Brain Academy: Wii Degree probably thinks of itself as "lifestyle software," I think of it as the digital equivalent of a dog-eared primary school maths book.

Review | Hot Pixel
Cooling off period.
Hot Pixel is a collection of super-short mini-games that borrows almost all of its design from Wario Ware Inc. In case you were in any doubt as to how far Hot Pixel borrows from Nintendo's Wario Ware, the game spells it out at the very start: "get what to do... find how to do it... finally perform!" That's how, according to the opening video, you play Hot Pixel, and, you may recall, it's how you play Wario Ware too. You wait for your next mini game; you try to work out what to you're supposed to do, and how to do it, and in the next five or six seconds you do it.

Review | More Brain Training from Dr. Kawashima: How Old Is Your Brain?
Impeccable gaming logic.
It's a little known fact about me that I came fifth in my year at the University of Oxford. That's something that only my close family and a few friends know. It's not something that I boast about down the pub, after a few beers. It's also not something I slip into any conversation with any stranger at the earliest available opportunity. And it's certainly not something I'd ever dream of boasting about to a few million people on the internet under the guise of commencing a videogame review. But yes, if you must know, I got the fifth highest first class degree in the school of modern history in 1997. And everyone knows you can't get better than fifth. And that was back when exams were difficult. So obviously I'm massively clever. Or massively good at history.
