Review | Saint Seiya: The Hades

    Hash of the titans

There was a time early in the 32-bit generation where everybody wanted a piece of the 3-D fighting market. Success for the likes of Tekken, Virtua Fighter and Soul Blade forced developers around the world to have a crack at what was obviously the genre du jour to varying effect - Square's Tobal No. 1 rates among the more interesting, while shameless cash-ins like Star Wars: Masters Of Teras Kasi became a common sight as shops became saturated with PlayStation software.

    Review | Ghost Rider

    Flaming Hell.

I'm an enormous nerd when it comes to the more ridiculous and obscure corners of the Marvel Comics universe. Well, not enormous in that sense (I'm actually reasonably svelte for a thirty-something man who plays games for a living) but, having already completed Ultimate Alliance on the Xbox, I did buy it again on the 360 just so I could play as Moon Knight.

    Review | Chili Con Carnage

    A Mexican experience with meat.

I never thought a PSP third person shooter would have my favourite feature of the year so far. Screw Okami's paintbrush, Final Fantasy XII's gambits and Supreme Commander's scale. Screw Rainbow Six Vegas's co-op and Godhand's difficulty. But what's weird is this feature doesn't even appear on the eight point list on the back of the box. Bullet point number four comes close with "Super cool beats - Experience a super hot Mexican underground through bleeding-edge, hip-hop music tracks from Control Machete, Molotov and Delinquent Habit", but that misses the most important part- what the music does. Or rather what it doesn't. Let me explain.

    Review | Rocky Balboa

A thin line between glove and hate.

After two previous console outings, both of which relied on nothing more than the public's residual affection for slurring underdogs, Rocky finally has a new film for his games to tie-in with. So what do we get? A PSP-only release with minimal connection to the Rocky Balboa movie. Go figure.

Review | Vanguard: Saga of Heroes

    You are not prepared.

Massively multiplayer games, from a writer's perspective, are a peculiar and often troublesome beast. On one hand, when they're truly at their best, they offer us a chance to write about a living, breathing game-world whose human inhabitants make it more unpredictable and fascinating than any single-player experience could hope to be. On the other hand, though, they defy the conventional tools of our trade. We are used to writing about monolithic products, chunks of code and content which are etched onto a disc, sold in a box, and form a single, locked down product - something you can play for a certain number of hours, form an opinion on, and even stick a number on the end of the review which represents, in theory, what you thought of the game on some abstract level.

    What's new?

Yet more delirious ramblings about new game releases.

Everyone's favourite gaming gobshite is broken. Actually, that's probably inaccurate. It's not as if everybody likes me. But I am pretty funked up. Oh I know what you're thinking. You're thinking, "I hope you die." Rest assured though that if I do I'll be playing ICO 2 in heaven, not to mention haunting you.

    Review | Infernal

Now there's a name that's asking for it.

Back at the start of Infernal, Dave Angeldevil, or whatever the hell its straight-out-of-some-dismal-crap-on-Sky-One-around-11pm hero is called, is given a demonic power that can demolish metal doors and brick walls. It's actually pretty cool - the game seems to be demonstrating that it's over-the-top, it's got decent physics and Dave's (alright, alright - 'Ryan Lennox', but the other name suits him better) a proper badass, living up to his status as a fallen angel now working for the forces of darkness (or at least some guy with a spooky voice). Which only makes it all the more surprising that Dave spends the next few hours being obstructed by wooden doors and flimsy chain barriers that his new ultra-destructo-power can't even dent. The answer? Why, trudging around similar-looking corridors looking for keycards and buttons, of course.
