    Interview | The FEAR Effect

Lead designer Craig Hubbard explains his phobophilia.

FEAR's been on our radar for some time now. But then so have lots of things. The difference is, the dot that blinks for FEAR is more like that one off the motion sensor in Aliens. We know that when it eventually rounds the corner, we won't just click mouse1 while backing away perfunctorily; we'll be like suicide-cultists running around a lion's den wearing mangled kittens, screaming, "Kill us! Kill us immediately!" Then we'll get our tools out.

    One to pick?

It really wasn't that long ago when almost every other must-buy game seemed to emerge from the infinitely talented LucasArts, and the merest mention of a new one was enough to cause your heart to beat out of your chest. And then the second Star Wars trilogy spoiled everything and turned the once-peerless studio into a digital merchandising operation dedicated to milking the brand for all its worth.

Review | Myst V: End of Ages

    Myst again? Aha.

Most of us that love videogames will have found ourselves defending them at some point with the old "they teach valuable problem-solving skills" line. "Kids aren't stuck inside gloomy bedrooms wallowing in meaningless and mechanical slaughter; they are learning the lateral thinking and logical rigour that will equip them for the arduous odyssey that is Life!" Normally you trot this argument out and frailer, less confident opponents wilt or begin to back-pedal. Few debaters are actually sufficiently well-informed to point-out that most game brainteasers wouldn't trouble an unusually dense baboon.

On Sony's plans, next generation gaming, Live, and more...

In part one of our extensive interview with Microsoft's J Allard, the mood was very much one of an aggressively defensive showing from the effervescent Xbox front man. Justifiably proud of the company's decision to launch the Xbox 360 nigh-on simultaneously worldwide, Allard was nevertheless dogged in his refusal to reveal whether certain games would make it into the launch line-up.
