Steering open-mouthed at the PS2 and Xbox versions.
Transferable skills. If we can get away mentioning them without planting the seeds of a dodgy "midnight TOCA" joke, it's all our uni chums ever talk about. On a related note, they all seemed to enjoy TOCA Race Driver 2 a great deal. They can get behind the wheel of anything from a touring car to a truck and they're generally capable of keeping them on the track and competing, yet the disciplines are distinct enough that they need to build on that foundation differently each time. Much as they do in the student union bar when faced with the prospect of shots, pints or cocktails - and probably when they're writing dissertations and fishing around for internships, too, although we wouldn't know about that. Transferable skills: experience points for directionless drinkers.

Enter The Matrix may have sold over five million copies worldwide, but even the most hardened Matrix apologist knows it wasn't the game it should have been. Hell, even the boss of developer Shiny, David Perry, admits it was missing a ton of features that were on the original design document.

Interview | The Destructor
Radical's Tim Bennison on why you should play Hulk: Ultimate Destruction.
For years licensed properties have met with suspicion. Whether film or comic, many have been smothered by creative restrictions imposed by cautious license-holders; unique abilities and familiar events shoehorned into existing game design.

Will you lose your heart to it?
Releasing a game adaptation of Starship Troopers some eight years after the movie might not seem like the smartest commercial decision ever, but as far as '90s sci-fi action goes, Paul Verhoeven's movie was definitely one of the most memorable of its time. Fortunately the signs are promising that this isn't just another generic game-of-the-movie exercise, with Empire Interactive having widened its scope to take in the entire franchise including the cult Robert A. Heinlein book that the film was based on, as well as the animated cartoon series. Oh, and the completely ignored movie sequel, but we'll gloss over that one and move swiftly on.

Just yesterday, we demanded exclusive PSP titles to save us agonising over whether to buy the same game twice to play it at home as well as on the go. Hurrah, then, because Goku Makaimura - aka Extreme Ghouls 'n Ghosts - is just such a thing.

Interview | Tellin' Tales
We chat with Telltale boss Dan Connors about its debut title, Bone.
Every cloud has a silver lining. When LucasArts inexplicably canned Sam & Max: Freelance Police at the start of last year, what we didn't perhaps appreciate at the time was that much of the talent behind some of its best-ever game would stick together and form its own start-up outfit. In effect, the withering of LucasArts' adventure ambitions gave birth to Telltale, and in turn its debut project Bone.

Interview | Q&A: First in line for the PSP launch
The first three buyers talk about why they queued, and why they didn't import.
The PSP has finally launched in Europe. With stock spread thin across the UK on day one, most of the initial allocation has now been snapped up, and retailers claim you'll be hard pressed to get hold of one until Sony ships the next batch in a few weeks' time. But, as is so often the case with the launch of new console hardware, there were a few units kept aside for those determined enough to spend most of the day camped outside high street stores. In London, HMV's midnight opening drew a crowd of around 300 people. At the front of the queue were Londoners Paul Arneil, and John and Louise Brock.

Review | Virtua Tennis: World Tour
A game set to match the PSP's hype?
A tennis game might not sound like the most exciting game to rush out and buy for your shiny new Sony PSP, but when you're dealing with one of the most enduringly playable games of all time we're prepared to make allowances. You'd perhaps reason that we should have tired of the simple pick up and play gameplay after five long years slugging out the fuzzy yellow ball across Clay, Grass and Carpet. But like any true sporting classic, there's literally an infinite amount of fun to be had with Virtua Tennis. We'll still be playing it long after arthritis and senility have had their wicked way. It's simply too compulsive for words.

Feature | Xbox 360: Lots And Lots Of Questions Answered
Free Live for 30 days, RGB costs extra...
We're reminded of a scene from Grosse Pointe Blank. Martin and Grocer are sitting in a café having a polite discussion about killing each other and trying to order breakfast at the same time. Martin's talking to the waitress and wants an omelette. "Nothing on the omelette, nothing at all." "Well, that's not technically an omelette." "Look, I don't want to get into a semantic argument, I just want the protein." You're like that about Xbox 360. You know plenty, and you don't want to have to root around in somebody's neatly structured preview to extract new details. You just want them.
