Silicon Dreams behind Acclaim's urban footy

From the makers of four UEFA Champions League games

Silicon Dreams is working on a new footy title for Acclaim, the publisher has announced. Urban Freestyle Soccer joins a long line of badly named footy titles on the CVs of Dreams' employees, but unlike UEFA Champions League, Michael Owen's WLS and various Sega WWS titles, Urban Freestyle Soccer is a four-on-four game which aims to capture the essence of a Sunday afternoon kickabout in the park. Or on a busy road, by the sound of it.

    Nintendo brings Hamtaro to GBA

It was only a matter of time...

Hamtaro is coming to GBA, says Nintendo, and it's got an equally silly name. Hamtaro: Ham-Ham Heartbreak (yuck) is said to be similar in design to its GBC sibling, Hamtaro: Ham-Hams Unite!, which was released earlier this month. That's about all we know.

    Sony aims for new genre

    'Voice action adventure'?

The same issue of Famitsu that gave the Dead or Alive girls' volleyball antics a respectable 31/40 has awarded a much higher 37/40 to a relatively unknown Japanese Sony title called Operator's Side. Just to clarify, 37 translates to one 'perfect' score of 10 and three individual 9s from the mag's panel of reviewers. That's pretty impressive stuff - so what the hell is Operator's Side?

Review - a dismissive missive of the jingly one

Let's get one thing straight from the start; Jesters do not make good video game characters. They make bell noises when they run, and have a fixed grin that merely inspires irrational hatred. Hands up who wants to be a Jester? Hmmmm. The Rent-a-ghost loon was mildly amusing 20 odd years ago, and Pandemonium was ok, ish, but we can't see anyone rushing to do a next gen sequel.

    Treasure to develop Gradius V

    Ok now we're interested

When Konami announced plans to recycle another of its old school franchises at its Gamers' Day in San Francisco, we couldn't honestly have cared less. A fifth Gradius game, eh? A couple of screenshots and a sparsely detailed press release later and we couldn't really work out whether we should get excited at all - what could possibly raise Gradius V above its rivals?

    Review | Whacked!

Review - Tom finally takes on the world in MS' puzzler

Whacked! is a rubbish name for a videogame, up there with Plok, James Pond, and anything with a colon and a hyphen in the title. Fortunately, it's a bit better to play than it is to say, but I'm sure I gave my Gran a stroke telling her I was off to do some whacking yesterday...

Today we catch our first glimpse of Codemasters' ambitious 15-game Club Football project, aiming to bring fans of fifteen of the world's biggest clubs their own "home branded" footy title. The Codies have released a bunch of screenshots (quite a few actually) of the PS2 title in action, which you can view here, and not content with that, a bit of digging on the Club Football web site reveals a "Stadiums" video, which also shows off a bit of in-game footy action. Albeit not a lot. You can find that video in several formats: high quality MPEG (14.9MB), medium quality MPEG (8.9MB), and, oddly, high quality MPEG4 (14.7MB) as well.

    Yager trailer(s) released

Two for the price of none

Xbox-only "Action Flight" title Yager will be gracing our screens on March 28th, THQ has enthusiastically proclaimed. The game, the maiden project of Germans Yager Development, is built around a tale of conspiracy, corporate shadiness and widespread control freakiness, but from the in-game action we've thus far witnessed it seems that Xbox owners can look forward to a chunky, highly detailed and nippy space combat title in the traditional pyrotechnic sense. And thanks to these two trailers - one released a couple of weeks ago when we were napping, and one just this second out the door - there's an opportunity for you to take a look for yourself.

First Impressions - it's better than the Xbox version...

Microsoft can thank its lucky stars that Splinter Cell turned up just before Christmas to give the Xbox the boost it needed at exactly the right time.
