When Microsoft bought out NetGames USA earlier this month, one of the most immediate consequences of the deal was that the CPL lost its contract to use the ngTourney admin system to run its massive professional gaming events. The CPL has today announced that it has found a replacement for NetGames USA's technology in the form of "Eventricity", which will now power this year's Frag 4 and $100,000 Babbages CPL tournaments and future events.

After polling its members on the issue last week, the "Online Gamers Association", an organisation which represents online and professional gamers, today sent an open letter to ASUS concerning their recently announced "3D SeeThrough Technologies". Revealed early last week, the SeeThrough features were going to be included in future versions of drivers for GeForce 2 based graphics cards made by ASUS, and would introduce wireframe and transparent view options for 3D games, allowing players to see through walls and other obstructions.

But brothers Chris and Tony West are currently bucking the trend, building the stunning looking motor racing game "World Sports Cars" almost single-handed, although they are out-sourcing the sound design and expect more people to join the team as the game nears release.

Swedish developer Daydream Software have launched the first tournament for their recently released multiplayer game, Clusterball. The winner of the tournament will walk away with a top of the line PC with a 1GHz processor and a GeForce 2 graphics card.

In an interview with the appropriately named "Titanium Technology" website, Mobius Technical Director Justin Johnson has talked about the Revelation engine which powers the British company's latest game, the promising looking action game "Titanium Angels". According to Justin, the engine "represents in total at least 4 years of development time", showing once again just how long it takes to develop a cutting-edge game from scratch these days.

Swedish developer Iridon Interactive have announced that they are working on a new platform game for the PC, going by the unlikely name of "Akimbo : Kung-Fu Hero". Due for release across Europe in October, the game features six different worlds to explore, a range of animals and monsters to battle, and the traditional cutesy cartoon style graphics. British gaming service provider Barrysworld have announced a partnership with multimedia company NOW ("Network Of the World") to broadcast their Quake 3 Arena European Championship "to an audience of millions worldwide" through both the internet and television. The exact details are somewhat hazy at this stage though - NOW seem to be a fairly new company and don't actually broadcast anything on TV as far as we can tell, simply streaming videos from their rather Shockwave-intensive website. No doubt we will know more soon though...

British developer Deep Red, based in deepest darkest Milton Keynes and currently working on Monopoly Tycoon and the Thunderbirds game, have announced that they are now slaving away over another project. "Real Football" is a soccer management sim with a difference, seeking to escape the "old-fashioned spreadsheet approach" and instead "give players a truly immersive football world, a world that will involve them at every level of the beautiful game". Gibfest on wheels previewed
Last week, I was privileged enough to be invited along to The Playing Fields in London by SCi to view the latest build of their up'n'coming gibs-on-wheels game "Carmageddon : TDR 2000". Originally set to be called "The Death Race 2000", the name has had to be curtailed to just plain TDR 2000 because of a trademark dispute with a certain film studio over the use of the Death Race name.

Lucas Arts have announced that they will be publishing a role-playing game based on the franchise to end all franchises, "Star Wars". To be developed by BioWare, the brains behind Baldur's Gate and the forthcoming Neverwinter Nights, the game will be set four thousand years before the Star Wars we all know and love, focusing on an ancient conflict between the Jedi knights and the evil Sith lords.

Professional gaming hit the spotlight in Los Angeles last weekend with the arrival of Korean company BattleTop and its "World Internet Gaming League" in America. Although the tournament's $35,000 prize purse was far from the largest ever offered, the event was one of the most spectacular so far, taking place at Universal Studios in Hollywood and with stars like Carmen Electra and Traci Bingham on site to add some much needed glamour to the proceedings.

German publisher CDV will be entering the UK market with "Sudden Strike", a massive real time strategy game set in World War II, and described as a cross between "Cannon Fodder" and "Command & Conquer". The game features massive battles with literally hundreds of units on screen at once, as well as destructible scenery and a full range of multiplayer options, with players able to take control of English, French, American, German and Russian armies. In an interview on DiabloII.net, 3dfx's chief spin doctor Bubba Wolford has commented on the full-scene anti-aliasing vs transform & lighting acceleration debate .. just for a change. Bubba repeats that 3dfx believes "T&L is important for the future", but that "the main difference between T&L and FSAA is that T&L must be coded into the game", whereas FSAA should work with any 3D accelerated game.

UK-based hi-tech music magazine "Future Music" has got together with Sierra to run a competition to remix a piece of music from the forthcoming space-bound strategy game "Homeworld : Cataclysm". The winner will take home £500 in used fivers, as well as having three thousand copies of their meisterwerk lovingly pressed into 12" vinyl and distributed to DJs and radio stations around the country. Sierra are also promising to use the winning piece in their demo of the game later in the year.

Angel Munoz, founder of The CPL, an organisation which has run several major professional gaming events over the last few years, has spoken about how he sees the future of the company and the growth of pro-gaming as a valid sport. "This year the CPL sponsors will give away close to $250,000 in cash prizes. Next year that number will double to $500,000, and the following year it will double again to $1,000,000."
