Digital Foundry | Horizon Zero Dawn's PS5 upgrade delivers a nigh-on flawless 60fps
A great way to play the original game ahead of Forbidden West.
In a Gamescom virtual event relatively light on content, the release of a free 60 frames per second PS5 upgrade for Horizon Zero Dawn was a definite highlight, giving another Sony first-party classic the full frame-rate upgrade and dramatically improving the experience as a result. This patch is an interesting, because unlocking 60fps is not as easy as flicking a switch, as demonstrated by the initial release of the PC version last year. This showed that simply removing the frame-rate cap brought into a focus a range of issues for a game designed primarily with 30fps in mind. Put simply, it's clear that this patch took real effort to produce and it's likely that many of the solutions in the revised PC version worked their way back to this new PlayStation 5 upgrade too. The bottom line is that however Guerrilla managed it, it works, and it works well.

Feature | Someone should make a game about: teaching
Every day's a school day.
Over the years I've sat in my fair share of fictional classrooms, mainly in Persona 5, where you answer pop-quiz type questions and avoid projectiles between stints moonlighting as a masked vigilante. But have we ever seen life from the other side of the desk? I propose that someone should make a game about the day-to-day school life of a teacher, trying to manage their time and energy to better their students, which would shine a great light into pedagogy (there's your word of the day).

Digital Foundry | Hands-on with the new PlayStation 5 CFI-1100 series console
Does the cheaper cooling solution make any difference?
The new CFI-1100 series revision of PlayStation 5 is now making its way to market, bringing with it a wave of controversy. It began with the intriguing news that beyond revised WiFi and a new screw for the stand, the CFI-1100 model weighs 300g less than the original - an interesting puzzle that could only be solved by going hands-on. The first journalist to do that was Austin Evans, whose teardown and analysis answers a lot of questions, but raises others. Last night, I procured a unit myself, so I can add some initial insights based on my first few hours with the machine.

Recommended | The Big Con review - the fun adventure of a 90s hustler
Dog for sale! Dog for sale!
I was incredibly annoyed when 2019 arrived. In fact, I've been annoyed ever since. It's not that I'm the most well-informed K-pop fan by any means, but I did immediately recognise the charm of then-new boy band Verivery with their 90s throwback single "Ring Ring Ring". The bright colours, random shapes and yo-yos transported me back to my youth. Unfortunately, very few others have come along for the journey back to the era of California Dreams and The Battle of Seattle, but I imagine many more will jump towards that same magical time period presented via The Big Con.
