This Valheim "raft luge" is just ridiculous
Sledhammer.
A popular pastime in the Valheim community, for some reason, is the construction of slides and ramps on which to ride boats down mountains. Most of these typically try to launch the boats (and accompanying riders) into the sky, but the latest one is more about navigating your way to the bottom with skill - and hopefully not dying in the process.

Feature | Apex Legends' Arenas mode is the "first step" in going beyond battle royale
In for a wild ride (of the Valkyries).
The ninth season of Apex Legends is a big one - so much so that Respawn has decided to do away with the numbers, and simply name the new season "Legacy". There's a whole lot of Titanfall lore, significant map changes, and a brand new game mode called Arenas. It's all part of Respawn's much-teased plan to bring Apex Legends "beyond battle royale", as game director Chad Grenier first told me in an interview for Season 7. Last week I got to take a peek at some of this in a demo session, and hear a little from the developers about the design decisions behind the mode.

After playing Scavengers for a couple of hours, I felt cold. Like, to the bone. I'd frozen to death a few times from an impromptu storm that had caught my teammates and I on our heels. My character, arms wrapped tightly around themselves as I ran as fast as my limited stamina would let me to what I hoped was shelter, simply couldn't take the cold any more, and died. We were inches away from a fire. Such is the harsh world of this new game.

Digital Foundry | FPS Boost at 120fps: Battlefield, Titanfall and Mirror's Edge Catalyst tested
Another welcome bonus for Xbox Series consoles.
Last week, Microsoft upped the ante with its FPS Boost campaign, delivering 120fps upgrades for 12 Electronic Arts titles and an extra 60fps update for one other - and it's a terrific bonus for Xbox Series console users, albeit with a caveat or two we'll come to shortly. But to cut to the chase, every last-gen Battlefield game for Xbox One now runs at 120 frames per second on Series X, as does Titanfall and its sequel, and that's just the beginning.

Titanfall 2 is having a moment on Steam
It's fun to stay at the IMC, ey?
Titanfall 2, rather famously, didn't receive the sort of attention it deserved when it released in October 2016. Sandwiched between blockbuster shooters Battlefield 1 and Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare, it failed to see success in the sales department - despite receiving plenty of praise from critics. But it currently seems to be experiencing a revival on Steam, thanks to both Apex Legends and a Steam sale.

Apple Arcade dreamboat Skate City heads to consoles and PC in May
And the original version just got a new mode.
Cor, big news in Skate City where the fonts are modernist and the tricks are chained with angled swipes and taps of the thumb. The Apple Arcade classic is headed to PC, Playstation, Xbox and Switch on the 6th of May. Players will be able to clatter across the game's bloomy dream visions of Los Angeles, Oslo and Barcelona. Feature | The 16 year quest to unlock R-Type Final's 101 ships
The Final march.
The truism that the longer something takes, the more satisfying its completion isn't always applicable to videogames. Many of my joyless grinds have ended in a bitter sense of relief rather than waves of joy. But when that game is R-Type Final and the grind is unlocking the full ship roster, the little ding that announced I'd unlocked the final of Final was a profoundly personal moment of deep satisfaction. 16 years in the making, it's probably the longest grind I've ever undertaken and alarmingly it only took 40 hours of gameplay to achieve, which tinged the whole thing with a weird sense of guilt. I should have done this a lot sooner. But nonetheless, the deed was finally done and my instance of the glorious R Museum is now resplendent with a complete catalogue..
