  3. Seeking alternatives to revenge narratives in games

Recently, I finally had an opportunity to play Sucker Punch's samurai epic Ghost of Tsushima, and its story of the Mongol invasion of Japan made me think about the way games treat revenge. At the heart of it, waging war is taking revenge, a form of payback for an injustice committed to you. By challenging the concept of bushido, the idea there is an honorable way to fight war, Ghost of Tsushima basically affirms that in order to get even with someone, you sometimes have to fight dirty, something that's intrinsically much closer to our actual idea of revenge. Revenge is when the gloves come off. Paradoxically however, while the game takes a lot of effort in showing how its hero Jin takes no pleasure in sneaking around and using underhanded methods, they all feel very good to play.

Digital Foundry | MLB The Show 21: the first multi-platform PlayStation Studios title tested

PS5, Xbox Series X/S, PS4 Pro and Xbox One X under the microscope.

'Sony Interactive Entertainment presents'. We've all seen that splash screen, the white type on the black background transitioning into a polished branding sequence, culminating in the familiar cross/square/triangle/circle iconography - only this time it's not just manifesting on a PlayStation game, it's also happening on Xbox. All of them in fact, from Xbox One to Xbox Series X. This is MLB The Show 21, the first multi-platform release from PlayStation Studios. I've played the game across three Xbox machines and two PlayStations and the results are fascinating.

  10. Guitar Hero streamer gets full combo on "impossible" joke track

Personally, I was pretty pleased with myself for getting to hard mode when I was playing Rock Band, but for some music game enthusiasts that simply isn't enough - they also need to defy the laws of physics. Earlier this week, one of the very hardest user-made tracks in the Guitar Hero community was beaten by streamer CarnyJared, and the video of it really is something else.

  11. Marvel's Avengers Tachyon Anomaly event lets you play with a squad of Hulks

At launch, Marvel's Avengers was pretty clear about one thing: you couldn't have multiples of the same superhero in your squad. You couldn't have multiple Hulks or Iron Mans (Iron Men?), and you could only have one Ms Marvel. Which was a shame, because Ms Marvel was actually pretty great.

  12. Watch Bloodborne running at 60fps on PS5 - with 4K AI upscaling

Digital Foundry | Watch Bloodborne running at 60fps on PS5 - with 4K AI upscaling

A vision of the next-gen upgrade everybody wants.

Bloodborne is one of the most celebrated platform exclusives for the PlayStation 4, but similar to the original Demon's Souls on PS3, there's the sense that momentum for the series has tailed off, despite enormous critical acclaim. There was never a sequel to the game, and not even a PlayStation 4 Pro upgrade was delivered. In the here and now, if you play Bloodborne on PlayStation 5, you have a 1080p experience at a wobbly 30 frames per second that is barely improved over the PS4 original. However, today, we can show how the game looks running flat out at 60fps via backwards compatibility, along with an additional pass of AI upscaling taking the action up to 4K. Put simply, you've got to see this.

  15. Ghost of Tsushima review - a likeable, if clunky Hollywood blockbuster

Quite early on in Ghost of Tsushima, you'll be introduced to its dramatic, one-on-one duels. Two warriors, a dozen yards apart, face each other down across the divide. Up close: narrowing eyes and crumpled brows. Hands hover at hips, knees bend, feet press down into the earth, muscle, sinew and fingers tighten. Then - bang! - combat. It's a cracking moment, especially the first time you give one a try, and it's also a cracking example of what Ghost of Tsushima's all about. These heightened standoffs begin with shot-for-shot facsimiles of that famous scene from Yojimbo, an Akira Kurosawa classic that's both a mirror of older westerns and an inspiration for the '60s greats.
