Feature | Returnal shows that Sony can still be weird and daring
Next machina.
There's been understandable concern recently about Sony's reported obsession with blockbusters that are too big to fail - the God of Wars, the Horizon: Zero Dawns and the god-forbid-it's-real The Last of Us remake - so it's quite remarkable how Returnal has arrived within mere weeks of the story like some kind of rebuttal. This is one of the most daring, dazzling and straight-up different big ticket games to come from Sony since Death Stranding.

Feature | Farewell Jeff from the Overwatch team
A Sombra occasion.
I was really sad this week to read about Jeffrey Kaplan leaving Blizzard after 19 years. That's a heck of a long time. Think about all he's done there: directed World of Warcraft, directed Titan, which yes, never came out, but it was recycled into Overwatch and that turned out OK didn't it? Kaplan is a golden goose if you ask me. But it's not so much what he did but how he did it I admire.

Feature | Last Stop might be the most London game I've ever played
Getting through hard Thames.
What's Last Stop about? After playing the first few chapters, I'm still not entirely sure - but that's probably the point. An adventure game in which the plot slowly unfolds through three interconnected stories, it's initially a slow burner, yet the characters and cliffhangers introduced with each chapter have me completely intrigued - and I'm itching to know how each of them gets resolved.

Review | NieR Replicant ver. 1.22474487139... review - a better version of the weakest game in the series
I just Replican't.
Because of the absolute state of game reiusses, I have to explain what Nier Replicant is before I can tell you how it is. Nier, developed by Cavia, released in 2010 in two versions - Nier Replicant for the Japanese market and Nier Gestalt for western territories. Both are almost identical, save for their protagonist. The west got "Dad Nier", an adult man with an Ikea wardrobe somewhere in his family tree, and Japan got a young man instead, out of the concern that the older lead wouldn't appeal to Japanese audiences.

Recommended | Trials of Fire review - seduced by sculpting the perfect RPG team
Scorcher.
Trials of Fire is a powerfully seductive game. It pulls on a desire to sculpt a perfect RPG team, to have them gleam in the best equipment and have them wield the strongest powers, and to see them work together in beautiful synergy. I find few things more pleasing in an RPG, and I bet you do too, and Trials of Fire knows it.

Digital Foundry | Resident Evil Village demo tried and tested on PlayStation 5, PS4 and Pro
What's really going on with the '45fps' modes?
Last weekend, Capcom unleashed the first in a series of time-limited demos for Resident Evil Village. First up, we got to see the Village demo for PS4, Pro and PlayStation 5, with the promise of a Castle demo next week on the same systems, followed by a multi-platform release for both segments the week after. We took a look at the initial demo to see how Capcom plans to scale the game across the generations, what the ray tracing looks like, and how performance stacks up. Going into this, the developer told us to expect 45fps on certain consoles and game modes - confused messaging we can clear up having gone hands-on.

Feature | Appreciating the deceptive simplicity of Roguelite Asura
Hades games are good.
I can't think about Asura without thinking about Hades, and it's a bit unfair because Asura predates Hades, and everyone loves Hades. But they are undeniably similar. They're both action-RPG-styled Roguelites. They're both about being a kind of god and fighting other gods. But they're also different.
