  3. Astrologaster review - an Elizabethan comedy for the ages

I've been shouting about Astrologaster since 2019, when a build appeared in my inbox one day, and yet I still don't know exactly how to classify it. I'm loathe to call it a visual novel even if, mechanically speaking, the shoe fits - you mostly listen to conversations between two people, and make a few decisions to move the story forward. But we often think about genres in certain terms, and to my mind a visual novel usually bestows its player with greater control, and a greater urgency to achieve a specific goal - "I have to catch the killer!" "I have to make this person like me!"

  11. Someone should make a game about: swooping season

Australians talk up their dangerous wildlife something fierce. And sure, Oz is home to some of the deadliest creatures on the planet. But let me tell you a secret. Deadly they may be, but most Australian animals aren't particularly aggressive. The death adder is among the most venomous snakes out there. But unless you actually tread on one, they prefer to keep their distance. Funnel-web and redback spiders can deliver painful and potentially lethal bites. But they're not going to actively seek you out or hunt you down. If you look where you're walking, you're usually pretty safe, even in the outback.

  16. Ghost Recon Breakpoint doubles performance on next-gen consoles

Digital Foundry | Ghost Recon Breakpoint doubles performance on next-gen consoles

But there's a big resolution divide between Xbox Series X and PS5.

The new console generation has so far been amazing for players who love smooth, 60 frames per second gaming. Ubisoft, especially, leads the charge with the likes of Assassin's Creed Valhalla, The Division 2, and Immortals Fenyx Rising - all come fully equipped with at least a performance option, or run at 60fps by default on Xbox Series X, Series S and PS5. We can add another to the list here too: Ghost Recon Breakpoint. It was patched around next-gen's launch, and while running in backwards compatibility mode, the doubling of frame-rate is a game-changing experience. The Division 2 tried the same trick but came unstuck somewhat on PS5, missing some visual flourishes found in every other version - even PS4 Pro. Speaking of which, there's good news with The Division 2 here worth touching on before we get into Breakpoint properly.

Thinking of travelling on foot, or taking a portal? According to Valheim players, that's so last century, as the community has become obsessed with flying across the map using harpoons and ramps. Frankly it reminds me of the failed flying attempts in Chicken Run.

  27. In Bowser's Fury, Mario's world and open worlds breathe new life into each other

A friend of mine once told me that when Mario 64 came out, people became properly obsessed with Mario falling asleep. If you left him idling long enough, he'd drop off. A magazine or two started to ask for pictures of him sleeping in strange places - balanced on ledges, perched in trees, snoozing on a flagpole. I don't think the enthusiasm was simply down to the animation. For years, Sonic had tapped his foot if you left him and the Bonanza Brothers had swatted away stray flies. With Mario it was more of an impulse thing. Mario's world was suddenly a place. It was still levels and stages, but also fields and mountains and forests. The kinds of locations where, if the sun is just right, maybe you would want to go to sleep for a bit.
