Feature | I miss Bomberman and I really didn't expect that
Mindless pleasures.
You know how this whole pandemic has been a terrifying voyage of discovery in terms of what's important to you? It might be that you discovered the local cafe round the corner was actually a massive highlight of your day in normal circumstances, or that despite moaning frequently, you actually did love going to the gym. It might simply be that you vastly underestimated how nice it was to pop into your local Tesco without having to queue up for an hour first. One thing I've learned is that I miss Bomberman. It's an absurd realisation. Right up there with my failed efforts to make good arancini, because I really miss good arancini.

Surviving a world ravaged by the effects of an asteroid impact? That's probably lined up for the end of 2020, sure, but it's also the backstory for free-to-play "co-opetition" shooter Scavengers, which has released a new gameplay trailer to show what it's all about.

Digital Foundry | Crysis Remastered: we visit Crytek HQ and go hands-on with Xbox One
And for one DF staffer, a dream finally comes true.
It's no secret that Digital Foundry has a perhaps unhealthy degree of love for Crysis, maybe even bordering on obsession. Crytek's masterpiece was a massively important game on its release in 2007 and a title that still holds up beautifully today in many ways - and it's a reminder of the days when PC exclusives pushed technology so hard, we upgraded just to play them and actually did so willingly. Its status as a game that melts any and all PC hardware remains in place to this very day, though perhaps for the wrong reasons. All that's set to change with the release of Crysis Remastered, which revamps and optimises the original for modern systems, while still pushing the boundaries of today's technology. We've played it on Switch and loved it and we think you're going to enjoy it on PC, Xbox One and PS4 too. We know this because Crytek invited us to its Frankfurt HQ to sample the game on all systems, but going hands-on... well, that's just the beginning of the story.

Recommended | The Last Campfire review - puzzles abound in an elegant story of hope
Sparks and recreation.
I would love to know how The Last Campfire was made. Not the coding or the art, which I'll happily admit I would not understand even if I had a lifetime of education ahead of me. But the thinking behind the design. This is a puzzle game in which puzzles are everywhere - puzzles of different types, of different approaches, puzzles operating at different levels of the construction. Somewhere I imagine a huge wall filled with paper and bits of string - one of those evidence walls from the kind of shows you get on the Alibi channel. Every idea, every gimmick, every buried connection between one part and another. Beautiful!

Feature | Teenage Blob is a rush of music and oddball challenges
EPs and games collide.
There is so much energy in Teenage Blob that even the on-screen text seems to shake and shudder and tremble. Why wouldn't it? This is such a weird and brilliant project - half EP, half mini-game collection. The Superweaks (a band) recorded six new songs. Team Lazerbeam (a development team) made six new games. Then everything got flung together in a sketchy celebration of punk and the brilliant/terrible lost years between 16 and 19. Rotten jobs. Gigs. Set lists. The energy of it!

Here's a brief gameplay peek at CD Projekt's new creature-hunting Witcher mobile game
Looks all wight.
Back in the halcyon days of, uh, last week, CD Projekt revealed it would be bringing the Witcher-y world of Geralt and friends to iOS and Android in the form of a free-to-play, augmented-reality "location-based RPG". What it didn't do, however, was show much in the way of gameplay, but the studio has now remedied that with a brisk new trailer.

Feature | Fortnite's new Tilted Taxis mode is an enjoyable Crazy Taxi clone
Gears of war.
Crazy Taxi is no stranger to clones. I will freely admit enjoying the rather shameless The Simpsons: Road Rage back in the day, and to spending countless hours crashing around Springfield in a hovercar as Professor Frink. Fortnite's new Tilted Taxis mode feels similar, familiar fare.

Red Dead Online's lobbies have mysteriously emptied - and it's solving the game's problems
Lasso is more.
Red Dead Online has been something of a roller coaster in recent months: after the community protested the lack of updates by wearing clown costumes, Rockstar pushed a major update to introduce legendary animals and the naturalist role, and players appeared to be relatively satisfied. The celebrations didn't last long, however, as a subsequent bug fix update brought a range of issues so severe that Rockstar had to roll back the entire patch.

Feature | Brilliantly tactile, Game of Thrones: Tale of Crows feels like a new genre of game-as-interface
Novel.
The setup is this: you're playing through the history of the Night's Watch, set thousands of years before the events of George R.R. Martin's books and HBO's TV show, around the era of Bran the Builder, original Papa Stark. First, you choose a character to be Lord Commander for a while - this changes, with new Commanders and new stories for them generated indefinitely - then you make a few decisions, you send a few people on some errands, and then you wait. Just chill out for a bit. Watch little symbols slowly burrow their way into the wild forests of the north and gaze at the lovely artwork or just go for a walk, read an article, do something else entirely.

Dead by Daylight announces free next-gen upgrade for current players
And a major graphics overhaul.
It's that time of the year when developers start explaining their plans for the move to next-gen devices, and the latest to do so is Dead by Daylight - the asymmetrical horror survival multiplayer by Behaviour Interactive. Yet it seems players won't be getting any nasty shocks when it comes to cost, as current players will be able to access the game on next-gen consoles for free.
