  1. Pokémon Let's Go video provides first look at Master Trainers

A couple of days ago in an interview with Eurogamer, Pokémon developer Junichi Masuda and Kensaku Nabana announced Pokémon Let's Go would get new post-game content in the form of Master Trainers. From the interview, we learned these trainers each specialise in a single Pokémon, and can be challenged by players in one-on-one battles with this specific Pokémon. Upon winning a battle, players can then claim the title of being that specific type of Pokémon master - for instance, a Psyduck master. There's also a whopping 151 in total - one for every Pokémon in Kanto. Phew - that should certainly keep you busy.

  3. Handheld Dark Souls is every bit as brilliant as you'd have hoped

Seven years after it first came out, what is there left to say about Dark Souls? You know that it's harsh but fair; that it's enigmatic yet enriched by the deepest lore; that its combat is weighty and well-balanced, and that it's the most fastidiously dissected, widely praised video game of this generation or the last.

  4. Rocket League cross-play party system delayed until 2019

Let's face it - everything's better with friends, and this is a mantra Rocket League developer Psyonix has championed for some time. As one of the studios most vocally in favour of cross-platform play, Psyonix has actually already implemented the feature, which currently allows PC, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch players to game together (while PlayStation can still only play with PC - for now).

  6. Luigi's Mansion 3DS: GameCube port or full mobile remake?

Digital Foundry | Luigi's Mansion 3DS: GameCube port or full mobile remake?

Nintendo's veteran handheld continue to impress.

Seventeen years ago, Nintendo upended expectations by launching its state-of-the-art GameCube console without a Mario game. At the time it seemed crazy - after all, Mario titles were key to the success of its prior console launches - but this time, there was something else awaiting early adopters instead. Luigi's Mansion was - and is - rather an unusual game. Combining Nintendo's charming character design and fun gameplay mechanics with a horror-themed mansion certainly isn't something anyone expected at the time, but since its release, the series has become somewhat of a fan favourite. And now, the original game has relaunched on Nintendo 3DS in one of the most interesting conversions we've seen in some time.

  14. Something strange is happening to Fortnite's floating island

Fortnite's map is continually evolving - we've had rockets, meteors, and most recently a giant purple cube (nicknamed Kevin) which spent several weeks rolling over the grassy hills of Lazy Links. Having transformed Loot Lake into a millennial version of the Wizard of Oz, the cube seems to have reached the next phase of its transformation stage, as Fortnite's floating island is starting to look a little - well - different.

  22. Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 review: a polished, pulsating battle royale

One of my favourite things to do in Blackout, Call of Duty's take on battle royale, is to crash through windows. I know it makes a lot of noise, I know it alerts nearby enemies to my position and I know there's a door right next to the window. But I just can't help myself. Sprint, vault, smash! I'm inside, glass on the floor, loot to pick up or - hopefully - an enemy player who dies at my hand while marvelling at the grandeur of my entrance.

  24. Where have all the World War 1 and 2 flight sims gone?

As someone who lives and breathes games a bit more than most, it's refreshing to talk to friends who have only a passing interest in the subject. Sometimes, it leads to a revelation that just didn't occur to me before. Like, what happened to World War 1 and World War 2 flight sims? A few years back - okay, a fair few years back - they used to be everywhere, as a good friend pointed out to me one evening when we were talking about games from our youth. He had fond memories of such games and I, well, I'd completely forgotten they'd even existed because I'd moved onto other genres. There's always that rush to move into the next big thing, isn't there? As I thought of my enjoyable experiences, however, the memories came flooding back. And my friend has a good point. They were very good, so what on earth happened to them?

One year ago, retro console maker Analogue unveiled the Super Nt - a premium console designed to play Super NES games on a modern display with low latency and excellent visual quality. At Digital Foundry we reviewed the final unit when it released a few months later and were suitably impressed. The level of accuracy and suite of features on offer is certainly impressive and we feel it's the best option for playing Super NES games on a flat panel. With NES and Super NES now covered by the Analogue line we wondered what might be next.

  28. Revealed: Sega's cancelled Shenmue HD remake - with fully updated graphics

Digital Foundry | Revealed: Sega's cancelled Shenmue HD remake - with fully updated graphics

    UPDATE: Sega issues a statement.

UPDATE 16/10/18 3:52pm: Sega has been in touch with a statement - "SEGA and D3T indeed had started exploring the feasibility of a full HD remaster for Shenmue I & II. That being said, we soon realised that this was a project with its own set of challenges. Working with original animations and characters but meshing them with enhanced HD visuals gave us a game that we felt would not meet the standards that Shenmue fans expect and deserve. Rather than going ahead with a release that may disappoint fans, we chose to focus on bringing the classic game to PC and modern consoles, so that new players could experience Shenmue's original charm."
